In 1946, the world of biblical studies was rocked by the discovery of several scrolls in caves around the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea Scrolls contained translations of portions of the books of the Hebrew scriptures, a manual of discipline for the community responsible for producing the scrolls and a scroll that narrated an apocalyptic battle between the sons of light, led by a figure called the Teacher of Righteousness, and the sons of darkness. These documents gave biblical scholars a tantalizing glimpse of the then relatively unknown period of first-century Judaism and of the theology of at least one of its sects. Very quickly, though, the ownership of the scrolls became a point of great political contention between the Israeli government and American scholars like Frank Moore Cross at Harvard, and, consequently, translations of the scrolls appeared very slowly, if at all. Finally, in 1991, author Martin Abegg, then a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, published a volume of previously unreleased scrolls. Following this publication, the Huntington Library announced that it had photographs of all the unreleased scrolls and that it would allow unrestricted access to the photos. Wise, Abegg and Cook's collection is now the most complete collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls available. The authors' English translations capture the nuances of the Hebrew, and sometimes the Greek, of the scrolls, many of which are merely fragments. Also contained here is a thorough introduction to the history of the discovery of the scrolls and a theory about the community that produced the scrolls: the authors convincingly argue that the Essenes, to whom the scrolls are traditionally attributed, were likely not the community responsible for writing the scrolls. Wise (The Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered, LJ 2/1/93) and his team of scholars and writers occupy what might be called the minority position in scrolls scholarship: The Qumran group cannot be identified simply as "Essenes," the site itself was not a headquarters, and few if any of the scrolls were written at Qumran. The position of Wise et al., in contrast with the "Standard Model" (as they call it), is set forth in a brief introduction along with the usual information about the discovery and publication of the scrolls. One of the most helpful things these translators do for nonspecialist readers is to explain the process of manuscript reconstruction and the use of brackets and parentheses to indicate missing portions of text and the like. The translations themselves are generally more idiomatic and less stiff than those in Florentino G. Martinez's The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated (Eerdmans, 1996. 2d ed.). The edition of THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS - A NEW TRANSLATION that I am reviewing is the older edition, not the revised edition of 2005.I came away from reading this book with a better understanding of the times and beliefs involving the sectarians that were the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.The aim of the editors was to provide a book for the nonspecialist. They succeeded in that endeavor."In it we have aspired to be both responsible to the sources and understandable to the public."There is a clear explanation up front about missing material and how the editors addressed that problem.The editors examine the date of the scrolls and offer some suggestions for the identities of "the Wicked Priest" and " the Man of the Lie."On page 65 of the Damascus Document the Name is discussed in the context of swearing an oath- "He must not make mention of the Law of Moses, because the Name of God is written out fully in it, and if he swears by it, and then committs a sin, he will have defiled the Name."The use of the Name is also discussed in other scrolls.Some information on the Urim and Thummim was offered in Chapter 11 "Tongues of Fire". That subject has been of interest to me personally.The approach employed to interpret prophecy by some of the scroll authors is found ironically to be very similar to the approach used by Protestant Christianity.Some of the other topics of interest I read in the book are;The extreme positions in some of the sectarian laws regarding Sabbath activities they found unacceptable. The most extreme were the strict limits imposed on saving a human life.On the calendars of the time of the DSS-This was a divisive issue with a variety of methods used for reckoning time and the calendar.The importance of the calendar to two groups- the priests and the astronomers.The earliest list of zodiacal signs ever discovered in Aramaic is another interesting topic.Three extra-Biblical feasts are mentioned in the scrolls.The Wine Festival, Festival of Wood Offering, and the Festival of Oil.The editors also offered some helpful information on different Old Testament translations, some of the differences in them, and how the scrolls mirror or deviate from other manuscripts.I enjoyed the book. It's easy enough to comprehend, but the reader has to understand that this is not a complete translation because there are scroll materials missing and you will have gaps in the text.It's a useful resource in many ways. Keep in mind that there is a revised edition published after this edition.

I wan't sure what to expect from this translation of the Qumran scrolls (I had not read any earlier translations). The introduction is excellent, clearly explaning to readers what to expect - and not expect - from the scrolls, as well as some tremendously helpful background on the scrolls themselves: how they were written, the languages used, and some broad information about their origins and the site at which they were found. This primer gave perspective and clarity before getting to the scrolls themselves.Before each scroll is presented, there is a brief introduction. While any sort of interpretation will have its bias, I found no clear agenda in these introductions - rather, they too helped make some sense of the documents and shed some light on the controversey (where there was some) and differences of opinions (when there was) about the meaning or significance of the scroll.Taken as a whole, this is a tremendous resource, the scholarship and information presented along with the documents themselves are helpful and accessable to the non-specialist.

I have a copy of the original translation by Garcia Martinez, 2nd edition (they have to update it because new fragments were found after the original scrolls were discovered). That one is easy to read in parts but difficult to read in other parts, particularly those sections where there are only a few fragments.I picked 10 scriptures from my Martinez book and compared them to this translation using the index as a key to find each particular scripture (this author has given his own names to most of the scriptures which were not named in the scrolls so you have to use the index to match everything up). NONE of the 10 matched. THEY WERE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TRANSLATIONS.So, I took a chapter in this book and read each of the translations. In front of each scripture is the author's take on what it is saying. NONE OF THEM WAS ACCURATE. To say the author took giant leaps would be an understatement. I'm not sure how this was published except to say someone at HARPER COLLINS was completely out to lunch.I bought two of these because I really thought it was a new translation. I'm not even sure you could call this a translation. There's an entire chapter of scriptures attributed to Josephus. I have a book of Josephus's writings. These were not anywhere in there nor were they like anything he has written. So why exactly did you attribute these scriptures to Josephus? Well, the author didn't bother explaining that at all. :(

When a"liberal" argues for the recovery of the language of "sin" and "salvation", you notice. And when she titles a chapter, "Sin: Our Only Hope," you want to read further if only to find out what her counter-intuitive, contrarian angle is. It turns out that her perspective is a very insightful one. Taylor acknowledges that the popular notion of sin needs to be jettisoned -- it is itself sinful, you might say -- but not the fundamental concept of something being seriously wrong that needs to be righted and that the righting of it involves not just gradual improvement but a transformation of the human spirit that happens when we are in touch with the transcendent in a way that enables us to acknowledge that we've been out of touch with reality in a serious way. As long as we deny that there's anything wrong (recall John Cleese's "It's only a flesh wound"), then we will never seek or be open to a transformation of our fundamental life orientation (hence "Sin is our only hope"). When "sin" disappears from our vocabulary, then what is wrong gets explained in medical therapeutic terms (a "no fault" approach in which we are victims of external forces) or legal terms (an "all fault" approach in which we freely choose to make harmful decisions). Taylor argues that only a depth understanding of "sin" allows for the paradoxical nature of what we're talking about, for the complicity of ego and will in our refusal to acknowledge that anything is wrong, and for the hope of transformation -- not in any neat and simple sense, but in a deep and real sense nonetheless. If there's nothing wrong with you or your life or people who think like you do -- if it's everyone else in the world who's wrong -- then you can skip this book. But if you are among those who are not satisfied with overly simple medical and/or legal explanations of bad acting in our disjointed world and are willing to entertain the notion that in totally rejecting "the language of sin and salvation", we threw the baby out with the bathwater, you might find this a stimulating read.

Barbara Brown Taylor has never failed to give me new insights on an old subject. She does it again in Speaking of Sin. Very enjoyable reading, challenging questions, and down to earth wisdom inform, enlighten, and encourage readers to evaluate and reconsider ancient, traditional, and current understandings/misunderstandings of sin. History and traditions inform the present, which is informing the future now. As the author points out, many of us have avoided speaking of sin, and she offers a treasury of help in confronting the subject, and ourselves.

I am a big fan of authors who have the ability to express great ideas succinctly, and BBT once again proves herself to be masterful in this regard. This short read gets to the heart of one of the greatest problems with the church today, and I am going to be reccomending it to friends of all faith traditions.It only took a few hours to read, but I predict that I will be wrestling with the contents for the next few years, if not the rest of my life. Do yourself a favor and read it!

This book talks about the elimination of the word "sin" in our comtemporary language. She addresses what effect this has had on individuals and society. She has a powerful story to tell! I belong to a Unitarian Universalist Church and we practice a modern form of religion. We use wisdom of the past, science, sociology, current events, and our own personal experience to inform us. Due to our modern practice of religion, we have dropped religious language. I do believe in my faith's views and practices, but I think Barbara Taylor is on to something.

As always, so good. If you're uninitiated to BBTaylor, check out her sermons on YouTube. You'll know immediately that she has a way with words…..and ideas…..and important truths…… A rather short book -- loaded with content (as always) and a powerful, meaningful slant on sin. Without leaving you full of guilt -- just a burning desire to absorb the full implications of sin, confession, penance, and salvation.

To my mind and heart, Barbara brown Taylor is unsurpassed in exploring and elucidating the centralities of Christian faith. Without flourish, she cuts to the center of belief and the essentials of what it means to be a human being in search of truth. The only writer who comes to mind for me as a companion to Brown Taylor is Frederick Buechner. It was a blessed day for me when an acquaintance first mentioned her writings.

As I have come to expect from Brown Taylor, this slim little book is packed full of concepts that require me to slow down and think about what she is saying. I really enjoy the way she approaches a thought from several different angles."People hear the guilt coming and they leave the room. They are tired of being judged and threatened by Christians who say"love" and do fear."Also, after years of liberal-arts education, she gave me the most useful definition of "post-modern" I've ever seen:"My own working definition of it is that the modern age is over-the age in which we believed in the power of the state, or the academy, or the church to bring out the best in us. In the age just past, nationalism has brought us Hitler, science has brought us the atom bomb, and religion has brought us some really awful television programming, not to mention apartheid or the civil war in Northern Ireland. Humanity has turned out to he hard to perfect, and the old structures we relied on to do so have let us down.""The threat of sin and the promise of salvation sound too much like part of the old control mechanism for keeping people in line, which has failed even at the highest echelons of church leadership."Read if: You are interested in chewy and humane theological writing. This book will be extremely for me for a very long time. Awesome book!!! :)

My first impression was this might be a chemistry book, in high school Chemistry and I didn't get along that well, but since I wanted to learn about Fermentation, I thought I would make a short time friendship with chemistry once again and see if we can better understand each other this time. But thankfully I didn't have to do that. The author used no big mystery words and explained the whole process in plain English. I am a little surprised to learn that Fermentation is not a complicated process, it is really simple and some of the recipes he shared in the book are very appealing too.

I had been looking into fermenting things lately. When I saw this book I decided to take a chance and read it. It was very happy and glad I did. I learned a lot about how to get into and start fermenting. Now that I know how to start I will be starting my own this week.
