What I love about this book is it's absolute independence from any formula of genre. It's part memoir, part documentary, part journalism, and some other bits and pieces of this and that. Perhaps living in Alaska one has less concern for what others typically do when they write. The book is built on two main lines, like the two cords of a rapel if you will. First there is the description of the various man-meets-avalanche moments that create most of the books episodes, and the theme here is something like the tendency that humans have to underestimate the forces of nature and their complete disregard for human existence. Then there is the autobiography of the author and her husband, shaped by taking part in the man-avalanche conflict. The two threads are twisted around eachother to make up the book.If there's a moral to the story it would be that folks who play in nature need to think themselves out of the mindset that catastrophe generally results from big chances and big mistakes.
This book was well written and edited. Very interesting. I read the paper book first, and then years later read the kindle edition. I enjoy reading and writing about life, death, and survival in the mountains (and other wild places). I read this book a second time to better understand and write about an avalanche that I survived on the Mount of the Holy Cross in Colorado. My climbing buddy and I were extremely lucky that day. If you venture into snowy mountains regularly, you should read this book. Jill reminds her readers to stay alert to your surroundings, and to educate yourself about hazards that exist around you.
I gave this book a low rating because it just wasn't what I expected. I expected to learn about avalanches: why they occur, what happens when they do, the different types, where you can expect them, etc. This book isn't about that; it's an homage to this woman's husband. The couple does admirable and courageous things, but this is not a book about avalanches, it's a book about a marriage and a crusade to make local governments develop avalanche-related policies. If that's what you're looking for, you may like this book more than I did.
People underestimate the power of nature at their own peril. Safety advice any mountain sports enthusiast should have along with a fascinating treatment of human decision making.
This book tells an important story, one where it's obvious that many people ignore the warnings or are just plain foolish enough to take the risk. Jill writes well, her other books are good, and with Snowstruck she brings important revelations that there is deadly hidden danger some choose to ignore. They pay the price, and so does Jill because she's had to dig bodies out of the snow.
This book is fascinating and very well written, with excellent photos. I particularly liked the one of the author standing in front of a giant slab after an avalanche. The author can't keep everyone who works or plays in the snow safe, but she certainly gives her best shot. If anyone likes to go out out of bounds in snow, but doesn't want to win a Darwin award, they should heed the author's words.
The book started out a bit slow for me but soon I was caught up in the lives of the author and her husband. I never realized that there was so much to learn about avalanches. My son and his wife go snow showing. I will recommend this book to them.
But, as the book went on it became slow. I felt as if the style of the book jumped about too much, and really lost steam near the end. I did not finnish this book.
