An anthology is always risky. I began with lower expectations, and was surprised to find myself enthralled with nearly every story, each author tugging my insides in a different way. The down-side is you get acquainted with fun characters and a plot and then way-to-soon the story ends. That's what short story and novella is. On the plus side, if reading opportunity is short, this is a perfect book. All stories are set in Ohio, but the time periods differ as much as the type of story. I enjoyed the two post-Civil War themes. I really enjoyed a story taking place during the 1913 flood which devastated several towns in many states, not just Troy, OH. It reminded me of my own town's 1913 flood history. As a long-ago former square dancer and community theater stage hand, those two stories brought back fond memories, although I'm now too old to continue the experience. At least three stories had Christmas connections. Who doesn't like a Christmas story any time of year? Every author added romance to some degree, even in WWII, and expect plenty of mystery threads throughout.Pretty much something for everyone, and surprises for all. This anthology is not a collection of nine rookie authors trying to establish themselves.Bottom line--this Hoosier found some good Buckeye authors previously unknown to me, but worth a second look at their novel-length publications. And if YOU prefer shorter reading, then this collection may just be a 5-star experience for your reading pleasure.

Fred’s Gift (Bettie Boswell) I enjoyed reminiscing about the past in this story as Dawn read the letter her father had left her. It made me think of my own parents who have passed on.Evie’s Letter (Cindy Thomson) Evie’s only Christmas wish was to see her mother happy again. The part I enjoyed most about this story is that differences can be set aside where friendship can be made.Courtesy Turn (Rebecca Waters) I would love to see this made into a full-length novel. As it is it left me hanging, wanting more of an ending.Surprised by Love (Sandra Merville) A suspenseful and exhilarating story that kept me turning pages in an eagerness to see what would happen next. This story has a satisfying ending.Cold Read (Sharyn Kopf) This is a dual-time novel (1933-Present), with a ghost. Even though there is a glossary for theater terms I found this story to be a quick, easy read and I didn’t have to peruse the glossary. I like how the heroine describes the hero: very nice-looking, strong and he has good teeth.Debt to Pay (JPC Allen) Out of all the stories this one was the hardest for me to understand. It seemed as if it was only part of a story. I would like to see it written out as a complete novel.Soldier’s Heart (Tamera Lynn Kraft) This story touches on Da Costa’s Syndrome (PTSD) during the 1800s. It is very informative on what may happen when a soldier has (PTSD). Parts of the story made me sad, made me want to cry. I appreciate that God is shown as the source of healing. I recommend this story to fans of romantic suspense.Summer Song (Michelle L Levigne) This is a Tabor Heights novella; sequel to Firesong. I strongly suggest reading Firesong first to get the backstory, as Firesong is the main theme in this story. I suggest this book to fans of romantic suspense.Christmas Angels (Carole Brown) This was my most favorite story about how friendship was shown to a mother and her baby during the war in 1943.Overall, I enjoyed some of the stories more than others, thinking some were way too short while others too long for an anthology. As mentioned, I would love to see some of these stories written in a novel of their own. After saying that, I recommend this book to fans of anthologies.Disclaimer: I receive complimentary books from various sources, including, publishers, publicists, authors, and/or NetGalley. I don't generally seek out short story anthologies, but I'm pleased that I had the opportunity to read this one. The stories are enjoyable and engaging. I found the stories "Cold Read" and Allen's "Debt to Pay" particularly enthralling, the first being a romance with a touch of historical fiction and the supernatural, and the second being a suspenseful, well described "country noir" tale.
