As a student of archaeology and history who plans to make the study of the Medieval Norse the focus of his career, buying this collection of sagas was a no-brainer.My one gripe is that there is no list (that I could find at least) of which sagas and tales are included in this book, which happens to be some pretty important information for someone who's looking to quickly beef up their library with Norse Literature. So, in order to save anyone I can some time, and possibly money, I've listed all the sagas and tales included in this book here:Egil's SagaThe Saga of the People of VatnsdalThe Saga of the People of LaxardalBolli Bollason's TaleThe Saga of Hrafnkel Frey's GodiThe Saga of the ConfederatesGisli Sursson's SagaThe Saga of Gunnlaug Serpent-TongueThe Saga of Ref the SlyThe Saga of the GreenlandersEirik the Red's SagaThe Tale of Thorstein Staff-StruckThe Tale of Halldor Snorrason IIThe Tale of Sarcastic HalliThe Tale of Thorstein ShiverThe Tale of Audun from the West FjordsThe Tale of the Story-Wise IcelanderI hope that you find this list helpful!

Highly recommended. I found it relaxing after my divorce. Lots of raids and plundering.

Reading Penguin Classics, Deluxe edition, "The Sagas of Icelanders." The stories here read like history novels. They span not just Iceland but all throughout Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland and even North America. Most of the chapters are brief so I'm going through them rather quickly. Noticing quite a few genealogies broken up and woven into the sagas. Sometimes, it's hard to keep up with all these names. I am glad I got it, though! It makes an enjoyable read, over 20 different "biographies" in +700 pages.

Great book. I'm still reading it as I don't have a whole lot of time to read. But I really like this book. Great collection of the sagas. I love the "deckle edge" on the pages. Makes it feel like an old book. For those who don't know, the pages are "deckle edge" which means they are unevenly cut and rough on the outer (open) edge of the book to make it feel like an old book. It's done on purpose. If you don't like that, don't buy it. I think it gives it character and immerses you into the era.

I'm reviewing here the compilation not as a historical publication, but rather sagas themselves. As stupid as it may sound to geeks, I do feel they deserve this treatment as works of fiction to be viewed in their respectful literary context. Egil's saga is hands up the best saga of all. Expertly composed, easy to follow, big in scope and really damn interesting, not only as a study of a character - Egill being a murderer, raider, poet, insanely good warrior, Norwegian outcast and a respected persona in Iceland - but also a study of turbulent times. Rest of the sagas are a mixed bag, there are gems in form of the shorter stories and utterly boring and confusing longer epics. Egil's saga deserves five stars alone. By no means don't withhold from buying this book!!

This book has already provided hours of enjoyable reading for both myself and my 15 year old son and we aren't even half way done. The book consists of 9 complete sagas, and 6 tales, two introductions-- one very in depth, reference maps and images, a short glossary of nordic terms and an index of all the characters involved--a very important addition considering there are sometimes 5 or 6 characters with the same name. Some characters interweive in multiple sagas which I found a fun way of figuring the timing. I was afraid the stories would either be dry like a history book or fantastical and unrealistic like mythology. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find the tales flow very well, never drag, and are believable and brilliantly practical. Like a well written and researched novel, this book is hard to put down and I find myself mourning when I reach the death scenes of characters I grew to love in each saga: such as the handsome and lucky Ingimund; the violent, ugly, but ultimately loveable Emil Skallagrimsson; and the unwanted slave's-son, Thorkel Thorgrimsson Scratcher, who despite everyone's heckling, grows up to be wise and heroic enough to lead his whole people. If you love imagining Vikings and want a better understanding of their thoughts and ways, this is a fun way to learn more about them and gain insight into the adventurous settling of a small but important nation.

When I was growing up, I had the good fortune to have a collection of books regarding such Sagas, some cast off from the Rehobeth Public Library, others from Penguin Books. To get that kind of material, one need lay out the big bucks for the Magnus Magnusson volumes, which are rare. This is kind of the next best thing, very enjoyable for sure, but NOT really the very best material, each of which requires a book of its own. Icelandic Sagas were VERY popular in the USA some 100 years ago, you're onto a real treat here if you don't know. (Try separate book "Grettir the Strong", the most famous villain in Icelandic history and a really fun read!)

Had to buy the sagas after traveling to Iceland. A nice look into the beginning of this beautiful country.
