Chen Jian's works on China's rise to international power are groundbreaking books exploiting Chinese (and Soviet too) source materials and interviews. This book follows along the same pattern established in his 1994 book, "China's Road to the Korean War," which argues that Mao's ideological commitment to the social and political revolution forecasted, even guaranteed, a shooting conflict with the United States. In Mao's China and the Cold War, Chen goes further in his analysis, demonstrating that it was Mao's worldview and determination to make China the central figure in the international Communist movement that was the driving force behind China's many foreign entanglements: Korea, First and Second Indo-China Wars, Taiwan Strait Crisis, the sundering of the brotherly alliance between Beijing and Hanoi, and the nearly fatal rift between Mao and Moscow. Chen deftly describes Mao's concern for "continuous revolution," and the fear that reactionary movements abroad would influence the Chinese population at home. Of equal concern to Mao was the effort to harness the people's enthusiasm for ultimately disasterous endeavors, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Chen shows that Mao accomplished these "mobilizations" and maintained his grip on power by demonizing first the United States, then the Soviet Union. This form of politics served Mao well, allowing him to keep his supporters in check (even if he ended up purging them in the end) and his opponents disoriented. It even allowed him the freedom to make the compromise most surprising of all -- normalization of relations with the United States in the early '70s. Chen points out that even with this act, Mao was pursuing his goal of radicalizing his own movement, particulary vis-a-vis the Soviets. Ironic, then, that in permanently casting away from the Soviet-led bloc (to which Mao had more than once pledged allegiance), Mao nearly guaranteed the former's disintegration and went a long way to undermining international Communism's appeal world-wide.A bibliographical essay addressing each chapter enhances the usefulness of this book for students and those getting acquainted with the Far East during the Cold War.

This is an interesting perspective of what Mao's perspective of the Cold War looked like and the thaw of Sino-American Relations.

Chen Jian has written an insightful history of the role China played in the Cold War from the time of Mao Zedong's rise to power and the Communist victory in 1949 to the resumption of cordial relations with the United States in 1969-72. Chen argues that Chinese foreign policy during the Maoist Era was driven by Mao's ideology of "continuous revolution," and that Mao cultivated, and then exploited, a "victim mentality" in the populace in order to mobilize his people whenever necessary. This continuous revolution included an ongoing push for an international proletarian movement and called for the eventual establishment of China's centrality to the movement. In addition, Mao believed that the eventual triumph of his Marxist revolution would garner China a place of prestige in the international community. By focusing on nine transnational events, Chen shows how China's foreign policy was informed by this Maoist doctrine and how Mao would redefine terms, when necessary, to keep his revolution relevant to the current state of world affairs. The nine events that Chen analyzes are the Chinese Civil War, the dissolution of U.S.-Sino diplomatic channels, the deterioration of the Sino-Soviet alliance, China's role in the Korean, the first Indochina, and the Vietnam War; the Polish and Hungarian crises, the Taiwan Strait crises, and the Sino-American rapprochement. Chen weaves the theme of Mao's continuous revolution throughout the book and supports his thesis with an impressive amount of source material. In fact, there are nearly one hundred pages of sources and citations, some of which are recently declassified Chinese documents as well as Soviet documents made available after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, newly released primary documents make up the smallest portion of Chen's source material, and much of the remaining documentation is information that was already readily available.Chen evenhandedly examines China's involvement in Cold War events, seeking to prove his thesis rather than take sides or place blame regarding controversial events. However, as regards the scholarly debate among historians of "America's lost chance" in maintaining a non-confrontational relationship with Mao's China, Chen firmly places himself on the side of those who insist that such a lost chance is a myth. According to Chen, a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to the inner dynamics of Mao's ideology. Since the opposition camp Chen refers to bases its position on what Washington could have done differently (which, according to Chen's thesis is irrelevant), Chen charges that the proponents of the lost chance theory are operating on an ethnocentric methodology. China's foreign policy, Chen maintains, was designed to ameliorate Mao's revolution and was not simply a reaction to U.S. policy towards China.Interestingly, Chen can also be accused of operating from an ethnocentric methodology. He presents his argument that a CCP-American accommodation was impossible due to Mao's ideology, but as William Appleman Williams has argued in The Tragedy of American Diplomacy, Americans were operating under an ideology of their own during that same period. The American ideology during this time frame, according to Williams, included the belief that American values were Divinely-ordained universal values and therefore any other worldview was not just wrong-headed, but evil. Williams cites several instances in American history where this "good verses evil" ideology informed American foreign policy. Hence, it can be argued that a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to American, not Maoist, ideology. This view also challenges scholars that allege that Sino-American relations were made impossible due to tactical misjudgments and simple errors in policy-making by Washington.Throughout the book, as Chen examines the ideological motivations behind Mao's political decisions, he refrains from either idealizing or vilifying the Chairman. While this neutrality towards Mao's actions is commendable in many respects, it also leaves important questions unanswered. For example, a scant two sentences are devoted to the introduction and explanation of both the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the ensuing Anti-Rightist movement. These were brutal and tragic policies in the history of Mao's leadership, with extreme political ramifications, and as such, they deserved a measure of analysis in Mao's China.Another reason that the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement should have received more coverage is because they have a direct bearing on Chen's thesis that Mao's political decisions were based on ideology. Many historians believe that Mao deliberately instituted the campaign to get political dissidents to identify themselves so they could subsequently be purged. It could be argued that because the violence directed at the so-called rightists followed the Polish and Hungarian crises and coincided with the de-Stalinization process in Russia, Mao was making decisions based on threats to his personal power and dictatorial style of government, and not on his ideology. At the very least, Chen could have explained how the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement fit into the overall scheme of Mao's ideology. The fact that Chen glosses over these major events and does not address the questions they raise makes him appear remiss in his scholarship; at worst, he can be accused of only presenting evidence that supports his thesis. A similar problem exists regarding the coverage of the Great Leap Forward. Though Chen makes it abundantly clear that Mao believed in the superiority of his ideology, he does not elaborate on how Mao could continue to believe this in light of millions of Chinese deaths as a result of his Great Leap Forward and other policies. How did Mao interpret the failures of his policies and the deaths of his people as he put his ideology into practice? How did he reconcile his utopian aims and the reality his policies created? Mao's China does not answer these significant questions.Chen's treatment of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement is one of the book's strengths. Traditional scholarship typically focuses on the deteriorating Sino-Soviet relationship and the advantageous strategic and geopolitical aspects that reconciliation with the United States would afford China. This approach explains why a Sino-U.S. reconciliation would have been valuable to China, but Chen explains how Mao made such a political about-face possible. According to Chen, Mao viewed the rapprochement with an eye to reinvigorating his declining internal political power. By redefining or inventing terms Mao was able to justify seeking friendly relations with the U.S.--the nation that, for two decades, he had declared to be his movement's primary enemy. For example, even though the Soviet Union was clearly communist, Mao announced that capitalism had been restored to the Soviet Union and redefined Soviet Russia as a "social-imperialist country." He then declared that this type of imperialism was more dangerous than the United States' variety. By reclassifying the Soviet Union, Mao could justify banding together with a less dangerous foe in a united front against China's new primary enemy, the Soviet Union. In this way, a Sino-American rapprochement was made compatible with Mao's ideology. In addition, by deleting the Soviet Union from the brotherhood of Marxist countries, China, in Mao's eyes, would become central to the cause. The status brought to China and the CCP by being recognized by the U.S., and soon after by the U.N., also helped to fulfill Mao's goal of a prestigious international position for China. For Mao, the Sino-American rapprochement produced positive forward momentum and progress for his Marxist revolution.Overall, Mao's China and the Cold War accomplishes its aims by illuminating the role that ideology played in Chinese foreign policy during the Cold War. Readers will find Chen's coverage of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the rapprochement enlightening, and other sections of book, such as the section on "ping pong diplomacy," light-hearted and very entertaining. The book is well-written and very readable, making it ideal for a general audience or anyone desiring a general understanding and overview of Maoist China.Seasoned scholars may take issue with the fact that Chen oversimplifies at times, and at others he presents only one side. For example, Chen cites the Sino-American rapprochement as a major incident that led to the wholesale collapse of the Soviet Union. This is overly simplistic in light of the fact that Chen does not go into detail regarding the multi-casual factors that, in fact, resulted in the Soviet downfall. And as regards events leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement, Chen does an excellent job of revealing Mao's thinking and reasoning, but he does not develop the concurrent evolution of the U.S. side of the story. The book would have been enhanced by explaining the changes in the U.S. perspective. For example, a central issue for the Truman administration was the mutually exclusive American and communist worldview and their irreconcilable economic systems, but the Cold War as well as domestic issues shaped the Nixon administration into a security-focused government. Developing these contextual issues could shed light on the American contribution to paving the way for the reinstitution of diplomatic relations with China.Even still, Mao's China and the Cold War is an excellent contribution to the historiography of the Cold War.

Chen Jian's book for a number of years has been the standard "must read" text for any student of modern Chinese history. An excellent example of "new Cold War" scholarship, the book makes excellent use of newly available Chinese primary sources and secondary materials to explain policy making of the PRC leadership. The book's central argument is that Mao's endless pursuit of "continous revolution" in China defined his priorities in foreign policy, so that essentially a confrontational foreign policy became a necessary backdrop to domestic political developments. The argument has its own critics; one may argue, for instance, that the domestic politics first approach is unduly Sino-centric, and ignores the dynamic of China's relationship with other powers, notably the US and the USSR. But for better or worse, Chen Jian's argument cannot be ignored. The book is nicely written, and I had my undergraduate students digest it with apparent ease. Highly recommended.

Mao's envy on the economic success of the now defunct USSR resulted to the classic exchange of thoughts through letters between the two great communist society leaders. this book contains all Mao's arguments on why USSR would not be considered as a socialist state.

Gr 3–6—Readers met 13-year-old abandoned foster kid-turned-monster slayer Jack Sullivan and his adolescent makeshift army in The Last Kids on Earth. In this excellent sequel, the zombies are mysteriously disappearing. As the zombies walk in droves toward a shrieking sound, their brains are being sucked out of their skulls. While no fan of the undead, Jack and his squad set out to solve the mystery. New alliances are formed and trusts are broken, culminating in an all-out monster brawl to save their world. Received the book yesterday. My son ran to the mailbox to get it. We read two chapters last night and he was loving it. I had to literally pull the book out of his hand and tell him to go to bed! I never thought I'd have to rip a book out of my sons hands - so THANK YOU for writing a great story. We also read the first book, Last Kids on Earth, twice!

This was purchased for my grandson who loved the first book and asked him if I would get him this one. He was so excited the other day when it came. He's 10, in the 4th grade, and apparently quite a few of the kids in his class enjoy this author also, so it appears to be a good book for this age group.

Another excellent engaging book for my young reader. We've been working hard to get him to read something other than Legos, DC & Marvel comics. This series did the trick! When the book arrived he was jumping with excitement telling me about all of the characters and their adventure from the first book. You know it's a good read when you child decides to read instead of playing video games! We are awaiting the next book, my son suggested that the characters find a new kid and help that new kid save someone in his family. Needless to say, my son highly recommends this book to kids his age. Happy reading!

I saw the prequel to this book posted on facebook and immediately ordered it for my son who loves to read. He is obsessed with DoaWK so I knew since the writer of that book commented on TLKoE, he would love this as well. Anyway, once I commented on the post the author sent me a message and said he'd like to send my son a signed sticker for each book. Such perfect timing since my little one was just about to turn 9 and these were part of his birthday presents! My son read the first book in TWO DAYS! He absolutely loved it! I was trying to hold on to the 2nd book but once the signed stickers arrived, I couldn't pass up the chance to surprise my son with not only the book, but the stickers as well! I've attached some photos here for you to see just how much my son loved the book. The first photo is him receiving the sequel and the next couple of photos are of him realizing he now has autographed stickers for each book! Max Brallier has written a great series and has fabulous communication with his fan base! we are definitely looking forward to the future books in this series coming out!

Hi I am Layney, I am 9 years old and a girl. This book is good, because there is a lot of action, there is a wormungolous and uhm it was in the mall and crashed and it like ran over all the kids and then this monster man came and helped them and then at the end..... never mind, no spoilers about the ancient destroyer of worlds. This book made me feel awesome.

This series just keeps getting better. While the first book was a little funnier this one was more interesting and the characters are being developed very nicely. I also like the way the monsters aren't all bad. I am excited to get my elementary students going on this series.

It's hard to find something that your 14-year old will read. He stayed up half the night reading this and asked for the sequel within 2 days. It's not often that he gets into something so I consider this a real win!

My son was so excited to see this book for his birthday present. He absolutely loves this author and the series is great for 10 year old boys for sure. I'm going to read it next though.....

I bought this took on a friend's recommendation and love it! While I had heard of Ayurveda before, I did not know that it was about some very simple ideas on how we can be our own health experts. The book gives very common sense advice that has been lost in the shuffle of modern life. The descriptions of how our entire sensory environment -- what we see, say, feel, touch, eat, and so on -- affects us was incredibly interesting and spot on.In each of the lessons in the book, I was able to reflect on my own life, and clearly see how I could easily incorporate Ayurvedic ideas to create a more balanced and enjoyable life. I also like that Dr. Halpern tells how he has used the lessons in his own life, which makes the ideas real, not merely prescriptive. The book is a quick read, well organized and interesting.I am sure that anyone reading the book will have many "a ha" moments, as I did. I suspect that, for people who are well acquainted with Ayurveda, there is still a lot to learn here in how it is applied and the lessons from Dr. Halpern's experience. Now that I've finished it, I will read this book again.

This is an awesome book, Dr. Halpern is one of my teacher's as a student and practitioner of Ayurveda, I highly recommend this being in your collection of text books.

Great ayurveda overview. I really enjoyed the way the author explained the constitution test in more detail. This was also one of the first times I've come across the correlation between essential oils and ayurveda.

Wow! I loved it. Even though I've been frustrated about interactions with our traditional health care system over the years, it was difficult to find something nontraditional that made sense to me. I had heard of Ayurveda, but until I read this book, which explained the science in the context of one person's journey and made it all very accessible - I didn't realize just how much potential we all have to heal ourselves. I strongly recommend this book!

Great book! People are always looking for a book that will show them exactly how to change their lives. This book does that. It is very thorough and goes into a lot of things that most people won't even realize are important. This is a book about how to change habits like diet, exercise and all sorts of things, like psychology, before you get to a point in your life where you have a disease. And it works even if you are already struggling with an illness too. It's never too late to change and this is a great, easy to read book. I will recommend it to everyone I know!

I've read a lot of books & other material on Ayurveda over the past several years. I found Dr. Halpern's book to be the easiest for me to read & understand. It is written in plain English with explanations for not commonly used terms. I felt I could really relate to Dr. Halpern's own healing journey & therefore felt this is someone who I can relate with. This book made it seem much more feasible for me to embrace a healing path living an ayurvedic lifestyle. It was understandable & well organized in the way the material is presented.

Anybody who has an interest in living a a healthy balanced life mus read this book.

Pretty simple and comprehensive understanding for someone just starting out.

All Americans need to eat more vegetables and plant-based foods, but the idea behind this book goes to far and, just like every other fanatical plan it is based on science which is relatively new. After more than a year long journey into what we eat, my partner and I have drifted to the philosophies the like of Nina Planck and Michael Pollan... embracing centuries of eating customs from around the world, buying locally and sustainable organic and pastured food products, paying attention to old saying that your grandmother would have said about eating, making our local farmer's market part of our weekly grocery routine, and staying away from the center aisles of the grocery store. These very simple steps have had a transformation on us.Now, I keep this book around because I like many of the recipes and it is good there is quite literally nothing in this book that taken *seperately* is bad for you. They are all good ideas, but I firmly believe that for thousands and thousands of years humans have been omnivores (eating both plant AND animal foods for millennia) and that this MUST be the (if you avoid the commercial, processed, dead, mass produced foods of today and return to traditional food sources) best and most complete way to eat and be human. Vegetarian societies have existed traditionally around the world, paricularly in Asia, but ALL of them in each and every case (and this book conveniently skates around this fact) have obtained a huge portion of essential nutrients from at least one animal based product (such as insects, milk or egg) in addition to their plant based foods. There are, and have NEVER been ANY traditional vegan societies... Ever. Anywhere. And there must be a good reason for that.At any rate, I don't dislike this book in passing and as I've said it has very good recipes and ideas to offer, but taking this as a way of life, though it will certainly see you healtier than if you've spent years upon years eating processed garbage food, it is not as complete a diet as that which a true omnivore has available. Happy eating and feel healthy!

I'm a genetic time bomb. Cardiovascular disease is present in both my parents and their parents and their parents... You get the idea. I was diagnosed with carotid artery disease at 47. While my cholesterol has remained controlled by medication and a heart healthy diet, ultrasounds showed that they have not stopped the progression of plaque build up in my arteries. Clearly, I needed something more.I found and read Rip's father's book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell Esselstyn, and LOVED the information and the strait to the point "what" and "why" of a vegan, no-oil life style. Though I couldn't imagine life without cheese and milk products, I understood that if I was going to change my fate, something this "drastic" was required. So, I adopted the diet based on the information available in his father's book and began to see DRAMATIC results about 2 weeks into the diet. After 60 days, I lost 24 pounds. But it wasn't about the weight loss for me. While the compliments are wonderful on my new appearance and it's exciting to be 2 sizes smaller, the real changes (I hoped) were happening on the inside. Today, I got confirmation from my doctor that my total cholesterol has dropped from 188 to 119 and my LDL from 119 to 56. Nope, not a typo... 56!! Dr. Esselstyn's diet has turned out to be a godsend. You're probably thinking: what does this have to do with The Engine 2 Diet?Confession: If you're considering changing your health like I did, I will and must admit to being a little frustrated... Initially. Having lived my entire life eating a lighter version of the Western Diet: fruits or veggies at every meal, minimal red meats, heavy on the grilled chicken, turkey and fish, low sodium and low fat milk, cheeses and ice cream (remember, CV disease is a family way of life) I didn't have a large understanding of the variety available in a plant based diet and how the heck to prepare these items, let alone make them taste GOOD. Tho there are a few excellent resources full of recipes and how to cook and bake for vegans online, there were always the questions in my mind: "How do I do this without the oil?" and "Will this even turn out right without the oil?" So I found myself in a "safe rut" with few and limited players on my plate and in my bowl that tasted good and were diet allowed. Boring! The Engine 2 Diet has served to shed light on all my gray areas of understanding and has put variety back into my life. This book is a MUST for your new lifestyle. Rip explains a lot of the new foods and terminology you'll encounter and he tells you how to prepare them, too. I struggled in the early days (and still do sometimes) trying to figure out what's OK to include or skip. Rip put's it here in black and white. I keep this book on my phone as a resource when shopping or cooking and it's made things so much easier. So, so much easier. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.Words of Encouragement:Reading Labels Sucks. But it is a necessary evil. And yes, even a single drop off oil is a drop too much. So many things contain oil... Especially the ones that are supposed to be "good" oils (olive, canola, soy...) Hang in there. It gets easier and subsequent trips to the grocery store gets easier as you learn your safe labels. Don't worry about not getting enough fats in your diet. Plants and grains contain plenty in their "natural" packaging.Don't Skimp on High Protein Veggies, Grains and Beans. This is easy to do especially if you have a busy lifestyle. Grabbing a quick piece of fruit and coffee for breakfast for instance, IS diet friendly, but you just fasted for 6-8 hours while you slept. Sure you'll lose weight, sure you're cholesterol will drop... BUT you run the risk of increasing your triglycerides with your carb only intake. Increased triglycerides can lead to diabetes. Better to eat some cereal or oatmeal with that fruit. I use a disposable bowl for oatmeal to eat at red lights when I'm in a real hurry. Thankfully, this isn't too often.

I am giving this book 5 stars simply due to the glorious freedom following this process has given me. I have used Cooking for a Month several times through several cycles. It isn't perfect. There are some mistakes (not many). The cooking day itself is a brutal test of endurance. Definitely enlist some help. However-the meals are very good. I haven't had a single complaint and I have a wide range of pickiness in my household. The convenience of having meals prepped for a busy family has saved us money, time, calories, and a lot of stress. The mistakes? We made the most of it with the left over pieces and parts creating extra meals and enlisting kitchen creativity. Nothing went to waste. I can tolerate a simple mistake here or there when I step back and view the greater good of the entire project. We actually ended up with 35 total meals when done. One meal usually lasts our family two nights (cook one night, leftovers the next) and most times allows for taking lunch to work the next day. The process is not easy but most things worth having are worth the effort. I have used this book for years and will continue to do so.

The recipes are varied enough that you can pick a plan that suits you. Once you know how to use the book and the system, you can modify recipes and mix and match. I love that they lay out an 'order' for maximum efficiency. I've cooked twice using this method and it's awesome! I do package things different because I am cooking for 2 instead of 4-6, but 8 hours of cooking during the weekend saved me so much time during the work week!

This book is a game changer especially if you’re a busy person and have a family to feed. Eliminates dinner time stress and guilt. Saves a ton of money too. Easy to follow recipes, delicious food and they walk you through the entire process. Even has the grocery list! I highly recommend this even for single people or empty nesters. Just can’t go wrong with this purchase.

I received a copy of this book's first edition in the mail MANY years ago. (1990s!) Honestly, I am still stumped as to how I got the book. I didn't order it. (I've since purchased the revised edition and it's follow up book--Family Favorites). After it sat on my shelf for about a year I decided to give it a try. Be prepared, a month of cooking in one day is not for the faint of heart. My feet were killing me and I never wanted to see the inside of my kitchen again. But then I started living with my frozen meals. I loved them. There were a few recipes I chose to bump from the next round of marathon cooking days but by and large the authors have great ideas. Their instructions for the cooking days are priceless. I've so incorporated it into my cooking now that I can choose my own recipes and pull off the same results without thinking about it.So why 4 stars instead of 5? I've stopped cooking with processed foods so ingredients like cream of (whatever) soup are a no-go. I wish they would revise with healthier ingredients. The recipes I have used most over 20 years? Mandarin Orange Chicken, Beef Pot Roast (the marinade is amazing!) Chili Verde, and Mexican Stroganoff. Buy this. You won't be sorry.

This is my second copy of this book. I was given one at a wedding shower some 33 year years ago,I often worked during those years and this is the perfect cookbook for nights when you want a meal that doesn'tLook fast but, really was. The recipes are nutrious and appealing to everyone. Now, it would be hard to shop, cook or serve dinnerWithout using this team of women's suggestions, they are that good!

This is a great book. It's a time saver and since you do a lot of cooking at one time, you have ready to go meals when you need them. I gave it to my grandchildren to put menus together that they like and we went from there. You won't be disappointed!

This is a great book to help you organize your meal preparation and save time. I was skeptical because so many similar books have recipes and ingredients my family and I just wouldn't eat. Mom was a from-scratch-only cook and I developed the same snobery - which has made cooking hard for many-a-year.Once A Month Cooking has taken me over the hump, with delicious and nutritious recipes. Each recipe section offers plenty of variety, so you're not eating chicken or hamburger for 30 days. The master ingredients list cut grocery shopping to 70 minutes. The easy to follow cooking plan and simple recipes, put hot home-cooked food on the table nightly with a minimum amount of preparation and fuss. Hallaleuah!I'm so happy with this book that I've shared it with 3 friends. We are planning a cook-for-a-month day together to supply 3 families with meals. One of them said, "If you ever get depressed, you can cheer yourself up by thinking 'I have a whole month worth of meals in the freezer.'"

I did a 2 week cooking session and was not sure if we would enjoy all the meals. We are ale to stretch this into 4 weeks with other quick and easy family favorite meals (tacos, chinese) once a week and a weekly left over clean up night. Well I have to tell you so far everything we have had my family really enjoys. The Mexican stroganoff was fantastic. The best part is now we pick what we want the night before and pull from the freezer. I can come home, warm dinner, read have a glass wine waiting for the timer to go off. Clean up is a snap. So far the only family complaint I have had was there was not more to have as left overs.
