Within its first page, this book proclaims that it “will be the best business book ever written.” However, despite Calacanis’ 19 days of work writing this book (a fact he shared on his blog), I see this one falling short of the pantheon of all-time greats.Give credit where credit is due: Calacanis made an all-time great investment in Uber that made both him and Sequoia Capital many tens of millions of dollars. But here’s the key issue with the book: Calacanis wrote Angel to advise individuals how to invest their own capital as angel investors. However nearly all of Calacanis’ investment history is deploying the capital of others -- first through the Sequoia Capital Scout program, then as a GP in the $10 million LAUNCH fund he raised. And when investing other people’s money, you follow an entirely different strategy as your risk tolerance is higher and you often can raise more before realizing any gains. Thus, Calacanis deployed Sequoia’s funds at a level and pace far different from what he advises individuals, risking little to none of his own money.Unwittingly or not, Calacanis outlined a strategy in this mass-market book that only can and should be followed by the select few that already have a net worth above $10 million. His rule of thumb is to deploy up to 10% of your net worth in angel investment (despite stating on his Angellist syndicate page that “angel investing should never be more than 1% of your total portfolio/net worth"), and he writes that you need to invest in at least 50 startups to receive outsize returns. Given that many startups have minimum investment thresholds, you’ll likely need at least $20k per startup, which entails $1 million+ for 50 companies, requiring a $10 million net worth for this $1 million invested.At one point he mentions he’ll provide advice on ways to get in the game with less capital, but in the chapter “Going Straight from College to Angel Investing” he provides no such alternatives, and simply rifts on how he wished he would have gotten in early on companies like Microsoft and Hewlett Packard. In “How to Be an Angel Investor with Little or No Money” the alternatives he mentions to being an angel are: being a VC, buying shares on the secondary market, becoming an advisor, or founding a company. None of these are ways to build and scale an angel portfolio. While he does suggest getting started by investing some capital in syndicates, he (rightfully) never suggests that this alone is a solid path to a strong portfolio; it's a smart tactic to help you build credibility and a network, but not something that on its own provides a path to a portfolio with a desirable risk/reward profile.It would be one thing if the book clearly addressed why Calacanis followed path A but you should follow path B, but this doesn't happen. Unfortunately what I believe gets buried in this are the decades of hustle that it took for Calacanis to have access to the opportunities he did - namely Sequoia Capital funds to invest risk free, and an audience with early-stage Uber (which attended a startup pitch event he hosted, attended by several other VCs). These came about because of his dogged approach to building (and sometimes failing with) startups, networking, self-promoting, and running the single most well-known startup launch/pitch event, originally with TechCrunch.Finally, it bothered me to see clear inaccuracies in the book that made it in through insufficient editing and review. In chapter 3, he outlines a hypothetical angel portfolio that he says returns $315k, when the numbers add up to only $270k. In the analysis of this, he conflates returns on the angel portfolio with returns on one’s entire net worth, ultimately unintentionally outlining a horrendous risk/return scenario in a section intended to do the opposite.

I sat down to write this review and just let out a sigh. I suppose that the content is highly appropriate for a blog, but just isn't good enough to justify charging $20 for a book.Angel covers Jason Calacanis' playbook for investing in startups. The book weaves advice and examples from Jason's many years of investing (and generally being a part of the Valley's ecosystem), with a few autobiographical details here and there.The best parts of the book include Jason's approach to due diligence and interviewing founders. I particularly liked the four questions he asks when he first meets a founder: wonderful open ended questions meant to get to the meat of the problem. Jason advises us to listen intently to the answers.But this isn't enough to outweigh the negatives of this book. Jason's advocating for listening and asking these questions is nothing new. If you're even a casual observer of how Sequoia communicates to the outside world, you'll immediately recognize the same building blocks - just check out Doug Leone's bio on their website or look up their famous pitch checklist. Additionally, as other reviewers have pointed out, the book seems most appropriate for someone who already has a net worth of eight figures and above - which is not yours truly.I guess the thing that I disliked the most is Jason's arrogance. He argues that he's "gone from being viewed as an outsider to one of the most considered and knowledgeable strategists in the business." He gripes about being banned from a Y Combinator Demo Day - how dare they do that to the best angel investor there is?! He's ticked off that "dopey people" get board seats at high profile firms but he, clearly the more deserving one, hasn't been asked to join a high profile board yet.I have a hard time imagining how someone with such a big ego can have the self restraint to truly listen to founders. I recently listened to him interview Laura Huang from Wharton - she repeatedly had to correct him when it was clear he missed her point. Not a good sign. I also have a hard time imagining that what I write here will trigger even a sliver of self reflection.Separately, the book needs a better editor. I rolled my eyes at mistakes such as "esprit DES corps" being allowed in the published version. We all make mistakes, but I'm not charging for a book. Using fancy French words isn't a must - but if you do use them, don't mess it up. It just makes you look silly. The profanity may ruffle some feathers, but I didn't mind - tighten up the writing though!Bottom line: I have a nagging feeling that this book was written because Jason wanted to add another line to his LinkedIn profile / a few more words to his Twitter bio. I'm not convinced it was written for the benefit of its readers.

To be honest, I was skeptical about buying a relatively new angel investing book with solid 5 stars that had SO many more reviews than other angel investing books. I figured that Jason must have found some way to beat the Amazon review system just like he beat the startup investing system. I decided to buy the book and I'm glad that I did. Jason gave great practical advice that I wasn't able to get from other angel investing books. He takes you step-by-step through the startup investing process and even includes detailed etiquette advice for meeting with founders. The real meat of the book for me starts with his practical advice for joining angel syndicates. Perhaps it is his energetic writing style that prompts people to come out and review the book? After finishing the book, I am now motivated to listen to Jason's podcasts where he interviews other startup investors, which has also been invaluable and highly recommended.

Very happy I decided to purchase "The Desire of Ages" ebook with the audio version read by Barbara Caruso. I've been searching for an affordable audio version and came across this which was recently released last year (2016). The ebook is easy to navigate and it really is helpful to toggle between reading and listening via bluetooth headset during my long commutes or when attending to chores. I appreciate the audio reading pace and apt voice inflections that I believe give the listener a chance to ponder on some pretty compelling intellect by Ellen G. White. I've recently become very interested in her writings, and I look forward to purchasing the entire "Conflict of the Ages" series & future audio productions by this publishing company.

Other than the Bible, this is my most favorite book. It's an in-depth, comprehensive story about Jesus' life and explains why there was sin, why Jesus had to come, and what He is doing now in Heaven. Beautifully written, captivating, and very spiritual. I can't say enough about how the writer explains the story of love, grace and mercy to people.

This rating is not given on book content but on format. Desks of Ages is a wonderful book for any home to have that wants to learn more about how and where Jesus lived. Any who want to become drawn into his life. This book remains true to Biblical writings. However it is impossible (almost) to look up events, people or places since an index is not included as it is in my hardback copy. Very did about that. But if you just want to read straight through no problem.

You will not find a better book than this. Well, the Bible would be a ton better, but this one is very good too. I recommend this to any and everyone. REad through this book and your heart and mind will be changed. The way it takes you through the Life, Death and Resurrection of Christ is amazing!!! Totally life changing!

There has been a deep stirring in my soul for many years. I learned to dislike this author when young because every time we kids wanted to do something, "Ms. White says that is a sin" was the general excuse to say no. Now, as an adult trying to understand some spiritual issues, I started reading this. What a switch! There is good enlightenment on the life of Jesus and it makes Him, for me, far more "human", and therefor, more believable. To learn that we do not experience emotions that He also experienced as a man made a whole world of difference. I have not completed the book but what I have read so far has done a great deal to help me understand my faith, my belief, and my acceptance of Jesus Christ.

The 1945 edition shown in the picture is my favorite of the book The Desire of Ages. I love the older pictures and the old time layout.This book is so valuable to me personally I read it again and again. It's not superficial, it is deep, yet worded so clear and understandable that it reaches the heart, and you find yourself loving the person Jesus Christ and in touch with the reality of His existence and eternal presence. You long to know Him better, to be closer to Him. This precious book inspires personal faith in Him, and walking with Him becomes a reality.Here's a couple quotes picked out at random:At His baptism when many laid eyes on Him for the first time: "But as the people looked upon Him, they saw a face where divine compassion, was marked with humility, and expressive of unutterable love. He seemed to be surrounded by an atmosphere of spiritual influence. While His manners were gentle and unassuming, He impressed men with a sense of power that was hidden, yet could not be wholly concealed. Was this the One for whom Israel had so long waited?", p. 138.The first paragraph in the chapter, "As a Child":"The childhood and youth of Jesus were spent in a little mountain village. There was no place on earth that would not have been honored by His presence. The palaces of kings would have been privileged in receiving Him as a guest. But He passed by the homes of wealth, the courts of royalty, and the renowned seats of learning, to make His home in obscure and despised Nazareth.", p. 68.I never want to be without this book.

Desire of Ages is a masterpiece, a gift of love from the heart of the savior. It's a long book, which is very good, because you receive an inexhaustible supply of Christian nourishment. The author's insight into the deepest meanings of the story of "Emmanuel" -- that is, Christ as a gift to the human race -- is uncanny, as though she herself witnessed the words and actions of the Son of God. Read a sample of the book . . . you owe yourself that much and you will never be sorry that you did.

Do you want to know more about the life and ministry of Jesus? This is the book for you. I loved it and after reading it felt more connected with the Saviour, as the Author helps you to see Him in all of his Humanity.

One of my family members has Diabetes so I bought this book to help control his blood sugars. The whole family loves the taste while helping our family member. Recommend others to purchase, to have a variety for diabetes diet plan.

These recipes sound great...I just haven't tried any of them yet.

As a newly diagnosed diabetic who is also an avid home cook, I have found lots of hope and delight in this cookbook -- plus lots of information. There are diabetes-friendly favorites here, as well as some new dishes that I'm anxious to try. All come with nutritional counts. The book is clearly written and user-friendly; it does not read like one of those "medical" cookbooks that substitutes esoteric ingredients resulting in bland, tasteless food. This book is a good investment for healthy eating, diabetic or not.

I gave it as a gift and it was well received.

A must buy. Excellent receipts.

Excellent! A large group of interesting recipes with surprisingly simple ingredients that really perk up the diabetic palate.

Some nice recipes, none great as far as have tried them, but a change from the other Italian diabetes cookbook I have

About the Author

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri in 1888. He was educated at Harvard, at the Sorbonne in Paris, and at Merton College, Oxford. In 1919 Poems was hand-printed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. His first collection of essays, The Sacred Wood, appeared in 1920. His most famous work, The Waste Land, was published in 1922, the same year as James Joyce's Ulysses. The poem was included in the first issue of his journal The Criterion, which he founded and edited.

All the of T.S. Eliot you will ever need in one concise and perfectly-sized book at a great value. Incredible in his use and eclectic blending of language and imagery. From the immense brilliance of Prufrock, The Hollow Men, and Ash Wednesday, and of course perhaps the last great contribution to English -The Waste Land, an indescribable sea change to poetry, to the immeasurable depths of Four Quartets, the fanciful Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, his plays, and many incomplete poems as well. Contains all the genius, but little annotation, therefore it may be best to also have supplemental materials to better appreciate these dense, often difficult essential works of 20th century literature.

I am not certain, not with any surety, that the dust-jacket of this printing is the same as that which I bought in the early 1970’s. I can say, though, that I believe that the ‘70’s editions used the same portrait of Eliot.I generally purchase Kindle Books. But, with Eliot, I had to have the physical book. Anyone would. You cannot begin your Eliot journey reading Prufock from a computer screen.This has been, I think, for many years, the definitive collection of Eliot’s poems and play. Everyone should own it and read it.

T.S. Eliot is standard required material in almost any college; certainly it should be on the reading list of every person who has aspirations of being a writer. At Sewanee there was probably a copy of this book in just about every student’s collection. I still marvel at the art Eliot presents. This is the third copy I've bought over the years. Both of my children carried off my previous copies. Do yourself a favor and immerse your brain in the words of Eliot. Vacuum clean your brain. My personal library contains several thousand volumes; this one is currently on my desk. No, I don't constantly pick it up. It's here to remind me of the pleasures I experienced in undergraduate and graduate school.

Now I can take it with me on my Kindle, phone and iPad. I keep T.S. Eliot, Kafka, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and of Course, The Bible with me at all times. Thank God for e Reading! Not to say that a physical book is dead; I will never give them up either; I guess that I am still old school; there is nothing like the feel and smell of those pages in my hands and the feel of turning those pages. But to have those physical books to have and to hold and to read when ensconced in a comfy chair, then to also have hundreds of books at one's beck and call in a Kindle Paperwhite or a smartphone! Ah, Heaven is nearby! Of course, REAL Heaven is where Jesus is, but in the meantime, having so many books so accessible is not bad! When I was a kid and the library seemed so far away, and books seemed so heavy, what I would have done for a kindle paperwhite.........

Mr. Eliot never disappoints. More to the point, Faber and Faber Publishers never disappoint. This is easily the best book on all the poems and plays delivered by T. S. Eliot. Chronologically listed, one can see how his poetical growth developed as the years progressed. Probably, from the early 20s influence of Ezra Pound.Only one very minor negative. His poetry in French are provided without an English translation. Other than that minor barb, this is a book full of bloomed roses. If you are an Eliot fan, this is a must own!No analysis is provided in this collection. The only notes listed are those of T. S. Eliot at the end of "The Waste Land." If you have a quality Eliot Companion, you will be fine during your page-turning travels.

This edition does indeed feature the complete poetical and theatrical works of T.S. Eliot. The poetry itself is in line with Eliot's reputation as one of the eminent modernist poet; sometimes tough but highly rewarding. If you are looking for an edition that will serve as a nice introduction to Eliot, this is not the one for you. There is no editorial presence in this, no notes or introductions to poems beyond the ones that Eliot sometimes provided.The book itself is pretty hefty as it must be to fit Eliot's work in, and as a result the thick book is filled with stiff but also fragile-feeling pages. All in all, it is an acceptable package.

POSITIVES: all the poems and plays are included, and it is a paperback, which is what I wanted for daily use, and abuse in NYC mass transit.NEGATVES: Many: •perfect binding (individual pages glued together), and hard unyielding pages; will be lucky if it lasts a year without all the pages falling out. Would have paid double if it had had stitched signatures. •Too thick and almost square; the whole point was to carry this thing around. It's so bulky it's unpleasant to even hold at home, without the bustle and shove of mass transit. •Type is heavy black and diffuse, no seemingly sharp edges, almost soft focus as if the ink bled on the page before drying, and the lines are too close to make reading pleasant. This is a thoughtless publisher (Faber & Faber) who must loathe readers, or making the book so disposable you'll have to keep buying copies.I understand paperbacks are meant to be disposable, but a bit more care would have been nice. To Faber & Faber: look to Vintage (Random House) paperbacks for how to get it right. Will now buy a second Amerucan hardcover copy from Harcourt Brace, rip off the hard covers, and glue on my own softcover.

I wanted the book to enlighten my thoughts and to research the man. The book was ordered, paid for and delivered with no problems and was in the condition it was advertised as.
