Holy crap, this book is a total game changer.I have been following various health and wellness experts over the years, and have spent more time reading and researching how to be healthy and feel better than I could ever count. Finally, a book that puts it all together! I was so impressed how well PHD tied together all of the various schools of thought I've read over the years, into a simple, actionable plan. The writing style is engaging and easy to read for such a deep, well researched book. Right from the get-go you'll find recommendations that you can easily put into action right away. It's easy to tell the authors have put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and research into this book.My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (lymphoma) a couple weeks ago, which was my main motivation for buying the book. Two weeks later, my mom has started chemo and the doctors have told us "she's doing great with the chemo" and her "body is responding really well."I think a big reason for that is the PHD diet she's been on. She has a good amount of energy (for someone going through chemo) and a big reason for that is PHD.As a bi-product of cooking PHD friendly foods for my mom, I've actually lost about ten pounds in the last few weeks and have noticed my energy and sleep patterns improve as well.I highly recommend this book to anyone that is serious about making meaningful changes to their diet and overall health. Also make sure to check out the authors' website, there is a ton of great (free) content and helpful resources.

Most books on Paleo diet are repetitive. Finally here is a book that looks at all of the food we have available today and explains the science of the food. It answered many questions for me instead of simple infographics with rules. It is not light reading and not a traditional diet/cookbook but it is a good reference if you want the details about what you are eating and and what you should be eating for better health. I have the paperback, and it is tiny print on low quality paper. I think the contents could be organized better, like for example trying to find specific recommendations for the basic diet vs a ketogenic version is not obvious. Overall, though, this is the best consumer book on nutrition that I have found. All claims are backed up with references to research, and the authors are careful to say "probably" when it would be impossible to verify something about prehistoric diets or health conditions. For those who want the benefits of a more healthful diet but are not interested in the science, this particular book might not be very helpful.

Week 4 PHD Update: Success!!!Another half pound bites the dust woot woot!! This may not sound like a lot to many people, but I don't have a ton of weight to lose, and I've NEVER lost weight as painlessly and naturally as I have on this plan!I can absolutely do this plan for life and never feel deprived. I still have not counted one calorie, nor have I felt hungry once, even though I'm Intermittent Fasting 16 hours per day! (For the most part I eat all my meals between 11a-7p each day.)This brings my total loss at close to ten pounds in one month!! I feel this is a healthy, sustainable, permanent, weight loss. I am so completely happy with this!!In my first-third week updates, I shared how I am waking up more refreshed, and clearer headed, have more energy throughout the day, and can handle stress better (fewer things "get" to me).My husband, who doesn't need to lose weight, is trimming up. Though he's lost no weight, his waist is has trimmed down (his pants are looser), his chest is getting more solid, etc.He has only cut out grains/legumes and has not changed his routine (which is naturally active), yet is experiencing these surprising improvements! He is not intermittent fasting. The best part is, how he's feeling over all! He has a renewed sense of wellness and was previously getting stiffness in his joints which has nearly disappeared! One thing to note: I've experienced some headaches this past week, especially when I wake up. I'm not prone to headaches and am wondering if anyone else experienced these?I'm assuming they are from either:1). A naturally-occurring detox, which will dissipate on its own.2). An introduction of something in my new grain-free way of eating that I may have an allergy to (possibly coconut flour??)3). I'm not drinking enough fluids ... which isn't likely b/c I drink water and herbal teas all day. What I plan to do: I'll wait one more week to see if they go away on heir own. If not, I'll begin logging what I eat (urrrg) to see if I can pinpoint any patterns.All-in-all, we're both extremely happy with the continued improvements we're experiencing!!What's more, I'm becoming a grain-free baker for the first time ever, which has actually been a lot of fun and has seen more successes than failures!!That says a lot for a woman who works full time and has always enjoyed cooking, but rarely liked to bake! :DANOTHER PLUS, is that the author, Paul Jaminet is extremely responsive to questions!! What a rare gift from an author!Response from Paul Jaminet via Perfect Health Diet FB Page:Hi [Roze]; The headaches are probably due to dehydration from lack of electrolytes. Try adding potassium-rich vegetables to your diet (tomatoes, potatoes, others), adding salt, and drinking more water. Herbal teas are often diuretic (promoting urination) so they may actually impair hydration status. Thanks for sharing!

I've been following the Perfect Health Diet since I first discovered it through Paul's blog at [...]. I was searching for a means to improve my failing health. At the time I was a vegan. With my health continuing to go down hill, I decided to do the opposite.First, I started with the Atkins diet, and saw amazing results in how I felt. As weight loss was not necessary, I continued to search for a diet geared to excellent health. That is when I happened on Paul Jaminet's scholarly, but kind and caring blog. His academic approach appealed to me. I, too, try to read as much scientific research about health and nutrition as I can, but my time is limited. I was also pleased to find Paul had access to research that I as a layman do not have, due to his wife's work as a cancer researcher. It takes years to become ill. Likewise, it can take years to become well. I am not wholly well yet, but have come far since I started this diet early in 2011. I read and followed the Jaminet's first self-published book, and continued to learn and improve my health and my husband's health. This book is a continuation of my journey. At 61, I feel better than I did at 55! And that is saying a great deal!

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a very engaging and entertaining account of extreme family dysfunction. Someone in my book club chose the book; I was unpredared for the bizarre behavior I would encounter in this autobiographical novel. The title captured my attention because running with scissors and other hazardous behaviors were strictly forbidden when I was growing up. At first it seemed that absolutely nothing was forbidden in this family. As the story unfolds a few seemingly incomprehensible rules are revealed. The reason for these rules becomes apparent near the end of the book.Authors of autobiographical novels about family dysfunction rarely avoid the "poor me" syndrome. The author describes, but does not judge the family he grew up in.This book demands that the reader suspend disbelief in order to continue; from my point of view, doing so was well worth the effort.

Something I felt was missing in this memoir though it was funny and crazy. I felt it was such a different kind of read for me and I enjoyed it so much.Ok so I read the book and I was laughing so hard and thought to myself that I have to watch the movie and the movie sucked big time.Ok and now as for the book, I have to say Auggie had one of the most stangest childhood I have ever read about and he was surrounded by some pretty colorful characters. There were times I was laughing out pretty loud and at times I sadly went "oh dear" (his sexual experiences etc) Sometimes I really wondered about lifestory while I commuted to work. SOme of the scenes were rather graphic and pedophilic undercurrents in the network of the family was disturbing.Auggie's mother is a poet (mind you also with mental illnesses) and his father is a teacher/professor who is an alocoholic and boy do they fight. And their son, the author, is sent to live with his mother's therapist, Dr Finch.Dr Finch and his family are really a mix of hippies and oddballs and other disturbing elements. But they are endearing too. Well, everyone is entitled to their beliefs and practices and so are the Finches. And so his quirky stories begin. This is not a typical memoir. The author includes all the ugly stuff in it as wellWhat I loved about this book:The author never makes himself look like a victim or survivor. He tells everything as it and how he constantly tried to make sense and struggle with growing up.I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a different memoir to read!

I chose this book because it was referenced in another book that I loved (E-squared); I learned that Augusten Burroughs transformed his life from that of a skid row alcoholic to a best selling author, and I wanted to read his first successful book. When viewed through the lens of his transformation, this is probably a five star rating, but it was a little too weird for me. I read the entire book in less than 24 hours, but on several occasions I needed a break from the overwhelming depravity that he described. I am no stranger to mental illness and the chaos that it creates, but in this memoir, there were nearly no normal characters to act as reference points. I do recommend the book, and I can understand how it spent so many months on the best seller list, but I came away feeling so wonderfully average, and for the first time it was a huge positive thing.

Memoir, even a few of the greatest examples in the genre, can sometimes fall short of engrossing, may crawl along as the author drags readers through events that fail to universally engage. This is NOT the case with Burroughs's work. This book never slows down, and you won't want it to. This is a you'll-lose-sleep-to-finish-it-in-one-setting kind of book. The language, subject-matter, and overall tone are explicit - properly so, as this boy's childhood was explicit. The title says it all; Augusten ran, break-neck, through a psych ward of formative years, wielding a plethora of too-sharp, age-inappropriate objects along the way.If you're easily offended, you might want to skip this one.Otherwise, buy it, settle in when you have plenty of time, and hold on tight.

Suffering served as entertainment: to me, it takes a real writer to make dark things hilarious. Everyone can write a heart-wrenching novel about loss and grief, bipolar parents, abusive shrinks, etc.. But only someone really smart and funny can make such a delightful read out of it, and magnify it into a study of white suburban America's sugarcoated filthy underside.

If one is interseted in reading about a household of mentally ill people and abused children you may like this book. I occasionally read true crime stories but this not one with it's described in detail vulgarity. I got 50% through the book and just couldn't take anymore. It is the story of a truley twisted "Psychiatrist" and the vulgar beliefs he instills and demonstrates for his and other children. Could not find any redemming qualities. I rarley leave a book unfinished but this one literally made me nauseous.

I did enjoy reading this book! I read it pretty quickly and the plot was really unexpected, different than anything I have ever read. The reviews I had read before choosing this book spoke about vulgarity and explicit content, and the novel definitely has both of those! It's one of those situations where you want to stop because it feels wrong but you can't because it's so interesting. If you become uncomfortable easily, I probably wouldn't read this one. Try and keep an open mind while you read and you will enjoy the honesty and vulnerability the author offers.

Review

"Dr. Timothy Paul Jones has created a helpful and easy-to-follow book and DVD series showing that the Bible can be trusted. How We Got the Bible is helpful for skeptics who are unsure about the reliability of the Bible, but also for believers who want to go deeper in their faith." --Sean McDowell, PhD, Assistant Professor at Biola University, author of Is God Just a Human Invention?"How We Got the Bible is a masterful presentation on the origin, trustworthiness, and history of the Bible. With clarity and wit, Dr. Timothy Jones answers key questions on how this ancient book came to be, how it was transmitted to our day,and he also includes the dramatic stories behind our English Bibles. You'll treasure your Bible more after this study." --Diana Severance, PhD, Director, Dunham Bible Museum, Houston Baptist University"As Christians, we have a responsibility to 'stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught' (2 Thess. 2:15). How We Got the Bible DVD is an easy-to-use tool that prepares Christians by bringing to life the people and events of history." --Gabriel Etzel, DMin, PhD, Administrative Dean, School of Divinity, Liberty University

We really enjoyed this Bible Study for our Sunday group. The only drawback is that on at least two of the lectures (some might argue more), Dr. Jones speaks so rapid fire with new information that you might need to break it into smaller chunks. I found it to be very faithful in upholding the Scriptures while presenting a very informative basic background on how we got the Bible, the canon of Old and New Testament, significant discoveries, and how the manuscripts of Old and New Testament were transmitted down to us. It deals head on with common fallacies and objections to the reliability of the Bible, and has a great companion book, leader guide, and study guide for discussion and more in depth notes. A ready to go Bible study, that just requires some review on the part of the presenter to familiarize with the material.

My Bible study class wanted to learn more about how the Bible came to be compiled. We ordered this in hopes to gain more information on the Council of Nicaea- which books were/ were not chosen and why, and other historical information about how the books of the bible were passed down, preserved, and put together. We are still looking for an in depth study on the subject. This set is more of an overview, not a historical based study. Definitely not as deep as any of the Beth Moore studies I have participated in.Very little actual history here (I will freely admit to being a lover of history, and DEEP study of the Bible- what it means in the original language, how the culture it was presented in transforms and lights up the scriptures in new ways, etc. I am totally and completely a Word Girl- in the literal and Biblical sense.)As another reviewer pointed out, this is very much from a fundamentalist view point. The DVD has six video sessions, which are formatted like sermons, with illustrations and stories from his life and ministry used to prove his points (Why the Bible is inerrant, etc.) Again, NOT an in depth presentation of historical information for those wanting to dig deeper, but rather a passionate sermon on what he believes about the Bible and why.I have not watched all the sessions, but here is information on what I did view.Session 1 could instead be titled: "What the Baptists believe about the Bible: Inerrant, God breathed, etc." Having grown up in a conservative baptist church, there was nothing new here for me. No examination of the history of our Bible in this session.Session 2: How we got the Old Testament- Basically he said that Moses wrote the Torah (first five books of the Christian Old Testament)- which some scholars dispute, due to some of the books dated after Moses died. I wanted more information on this, but he does not examine the debate.Desperate for some sort of historical information, I skipped ahead to Session 4: How the Books of the New Testament Were Chosen. He told a story of some Christians from the early church, who carried scrolls from both the Old testament and New Testament, who were martyred. I wanted to know more. His point, repeated several times: In the 100 years or so following the death of the Disciples, 1st century Christians viewed the Gospels, Paul's writings and the writings of those who worked closely with Paul (ex: Hebrews), as well as the writings of Jesus' brothers and disciples as scripture. One of my Bible study members remarked, "How can he talk about "how the bible came to be" and not mention the Council of Nicaea? My point exactly. The goal of this series is not to educate those of us who seek to learn more of the history of the Bible we love, but rather to persuade people that God chose the books of the Bible, not some human beings in important positions. I rather think God worked through these important human beings and I would like to learn the stories of how it all came together.God is not less miraculous or amazing because He works in and through people. (Even secular people- like the Pharaoh who gave Joseph the job of overseeing saving an entire region from famine.)I want to learn more about the people involved in preserving our Bible, and I believe we can learn from their stories. We can learn from debates over information, and we do not have to agree about everything all the time. Most of all, we can learn through our differences that God is un-containable, beautiful, immeasurable, surprising, and awe inspiring, even if people are imperfect. If you want to learn about the debates (not hush them up quickly) and learn about the historical people God used to preserve the Bible, this is NOT the study for you. Also, if your group is more moderate, or if you do not agree 100% with the Baptist Faith and Message, know that this is heavily fundamentalist. (Repetition for emphasis. "Verily, verily, I say unto you".)

This book provides a great introduction to how we got the Bible from start to finish. It answers the questions we have and the questions that arise from the answers to those questions. The tables and images in the book alone are worth the purchase. Scholarly and winsome.

Great bible study on how we got the Bible. Very informative and thought invoking. We did a 6 weeks study on Sunday nights and everyone enjoyed this study. We learned things we did not realize.

Great course, a must for Bible believing Churches!

Still reading. So far so good

An excellent resource for personal study or your small group. Dr. Jones does a great job presenting a lot of information in a way that is not sterile or academic, but lighthearted and devotional. The reader is challenged to love Scripture more deeply, to study it more diligently, and to help others experience God through his word. Highly recommended.

It is very informative and an interesting read. As I get further into the book I am sure there will be questions that the book cannot answer. Then Icontinue to read other books and keep looking for answers to my questions.

This is the author's third book investigating medicine shortcomings. The first two were: The Last Well Person: How to Stay Well Despite the Health-Care System and Worried Sick: A Prescription for Health in an Overtreated America (H. Eugene and Lillian Youngs Lehman). They are all excellent. Hadler has extensive firsthand experience as a doctor, a med school professor, a clinician, and a medical investigator. Thus, he is well equipped to evaluate what works and what does not in modern medicine.Hadler's main beef is that U.S. health care "medicalizes" normal conditions by undertaking treatments and prescribing drugs that are costly, do not work well and have side effects. He calls such malpractice a Type II error (doing something that is unecessary that may cause harm). Hadler supports his assertions by referring to numerous studies.Medicalization becomes increasingly costly to the patient and taxpayers (and lucrative for the medical complex) as we age. A large percentage of health care dollars are spent on patients' last year of life. And, those expensive procedures are of no benefit to the elderly in terms of quality of life and lifespan. This book is interesting as it focuses primarily on the medicalization of the aging population. Meanwhile, the first two books looked at the overall medicalization phenomenon.Hadler, more than in his other two books, uncovers the relationship between socioeconomic status and health. Referring to a study of 10,000 British civil service individuals, he shares that the major determinant of lifespan was one's position on the socioeconomic gradient. Health adverse behaviors and cardiovascular risk account for only 25% of mortal hazard. In Chapter 4 The Aged Worker he explores this issue further. Individuals happily employed fare better health wise than others. Those health benefits carry into retirement. He calls this theme "social capital."The relationship between weight and lifespan is unexpected. Three studies from Australia, Canada, and the US. confirm that health and lifespan outcomes are not materially different for BMI ranging from 22 to 30. Thus, Hadler feels we spend too much time worrying about our weight. He personally does not know how much he weights. If one wants to lose a bit of weight, he recommends simply eating less as he acknowledges we are conditioned to overeat in a supersizing society.Regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD), Hadler, just like Uffe Ravnskov (check out his excellent The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy That Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease), reveals that cholesterol and saturated fat risks of CVD are not on strong scientific footing. Thus, both cholesterol and saturated fat are not bad for you. Statin drugs have a bad trade off as they have little effect on reducing CVD events and may cause serious side effects including muscle impairment, kidney disease, and higher incidence of diabetes. Hadler is also skeptical of the most recent CVD risk factor: C-reactive protein. The science is not convincing.Cholesterol and diabetes prescription drugs for the elderly are huge businesses. None has been shown to make a material clinical difference in reducing related diseases incidents and improving longevity. He feels little lifestyle modifications are more effective without negative side effects.Hadler notes that authors of medical studies with financial ties to the supplier of the health product they test are several times more likely to write a positive review than other investigators with no related financial ties.Hadler indicates that treating what appears like high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (Systolic 140) in otherwise healthy older patients is not beneficial. All those markers increase with age. The revised threshold for hypertension (140/90) are too low. He states: "by this definition, more than 90% of people who have a normal blood pressure at age 55 will develop hypertension as they age." This is medicalization. In terms of CVD treatments, he considers both preventive bypass surgery and angioplasty to be a travesty. "The benefit/risk ratio of bypass surgery and angioplasty is zero since we can't demonstrate any benefit. There is a tiny subset with a particular blockage that might be benefited by bypass surgery (about 2% of the patient with left blockage)." He refers to five studies who demonstrate no benefit for either of those procedures resulting in no fewer cardiovascular events or deaths (pg. 51-52). Considering the costs of such procedures, he states on page 54: "We are mortgaging our country to support an industry that scorns scientific rigor. That's irrational."Regarding screening for breast cancer with mammography, he indicates there are no benefits to undergo this test for women under 50 or over 70. And, for women within this age range the benefits are marginal. In table 3, page 67, he shows that based on an extensive study related to women in their fifties undergoing mammography every one to two years for ten years the probability of dying from breast cancer was hardly lower vs women not screened (0.46% vs 0.53%). Yet, the probability of false positives requiring unnecessary biopsies and further invasive intervention was up to 20%.Screening for prostate cancer is an even more egregious medicalization. Some presence of prostate cancer is normal in older men. He states on page 75: "By age sixty, every man should assume he has [some] prostate cancer... nearly all men die with prostate cancer but very few from prostate cancer... Of those who die from prostate cancer, most would have died about the same time from something else (usually heart disease)." Digital rectal exam and PSA test are highly inaccurate, resulting in a majority of false positives. Even when they do detect prostate cancer in the majority of cases it would not have lifespan implications. And, the most common procedure to treat this cancer (removing the prostate) results in frequent chronic impotence and incontinence.Regarding colon cancer screening, he recommends individuals undertake a sigmoidoscopy just once, if at all, that examines the lower intestine where cancer is most frequent. Undergoing colonoscopy is associated with a non negligible risk of intestine perforation (about 0.2% per procedure). Sigmoidoscopy is much safer. When he moves on to osteoporosis and osteopia, he indicates that our focus on bone mineral density (BMD) has little predictive power regarding probability of bone fractures. He states on pg. 130: "I see no [evidence based] reason for any well woman to submit for BMD at any age." Our focus to boost BMD through prescription drugs, calcium, and vitamin D has not demonstrated convincing results. He feels we get enough calcium and vitamin D in our diet as both are added to dairy products. Also, vitamin D that is not activated like the one we get from sun exposure does not do that much.Hadler is skeptical of many orthopedic surgeries. On pg. 139 he adds: "elective orthopedics is coauthoring the bleakest chapter in the history of Western medicine with the interventional cardiologists." He indicates that total knee replacement surgeries have had dismal results. Studies on arthroscopic knee surgeries have demonstrated they do not work. However, his assessment about hip replacement is much more positive. Many prescription drugs do not work that well. But, their results are often much worse for the elderly that are often more susceptible to their side effects and reap fewer of their benefits. Antidepressants have unfavorable benefit-risk trade offs for the elderly. Meanwhile, Aricept show no benefit over a placebo in the likelihood of progression Alzheimer's and Dementia. In one of the last chapters, Hadler teaches us how to live and die well. In one's ninth decade (80+), both the quality of living and the quality of dying should be primarily health concerns. This means passing away at home in a loving environment surrounded by relatives and specialized nurses providing comforting palliative care. Instead, elderly often die alone, anxious, without dignity while being overtreated and overdrugged in a hospital. As we age into our seventies and beyond, we all have some latent cardiovascular and cancer issues. Yet, Hadler says on pg. 175: "It makes no sense to cure the disease one will die with, in the ninth decade and little sense to cure the disease that one will die from in the ninth decade if another is to take its place in short order."

My 89 year old mother had a stroke in April. Due to her advanced age and increasing health problems I thought after the stroke she should receive palliative care till she died. I was almost shocked to experience the exact opposite from the health care system. She was provided, with little discussion with her family, the most expensive testing and life saving treatment available. Since she was a big believer in our wonderful health care system she visited her doctors frequently prior to the stroke and followed all their advice which included taking at least 7 pharmaceutical drug and many vitamins. After her stroke she left the hospital on 10 different medications. The health care system insisted that she also needed rehab and could have the potential to live independently again. After grabbing $100,0000 in medicare dollars for acute care and rehab services there is no money left to actually care for my mother. Unfortunately she needs 24 hour care and her mind is no longer rational. This job falls to the family and is an extreme hardship emotionally as well as financially. I am writing this to preface where I personally was when I read this book. Reading it was like seeing the sunshine after a long time in the dark. The book looks at the over treating of the natural aging processes and the reasons behind our health care system big push to treat most health matters with medication. The time with any health care professional is very limited as they are forced to see a higher patient volume and in many systems are only allowed 10 minutes or less with a patient and in which charting is also included. Very little healing can be done in this type of system other then writing a prescription. The other surprising information is the scientific data to support many of these pharmaceutical treatments is just not there yet the statistic are reported on in such a way to make the lay person believe the expensive medications are not only helpful but vital to their ongoing health. In most cases the studies if looked at statistically are not that convincing. Most of the health care professionals that I have run into these past 6 months were very well meaning. Unfortunately some of them like her cardiologist were defensive and negative when I asked to have some of her medication stopped. I believed they were causing some side effects and I doubted they would help the quality of her life at this time. I did stop these medications with no change in my mother's BP, nor has she had the atrial fib they promised she would get after stopping her medication. The book would be helpful to anyone entering their 60's and beyond so that each of us can make informed decisions about our health and how we will deal with the aging process. Health care it seems needs to move beyond an authoritarian system where we all should "obey doctors orders" and continue to move towards an informed consent model where ones health care provider has the time to review treatment options with their patients including no treatment. I thank Dr Hadler for thinking outside the box and exposing a system that needs revamping especially when caring for our aging population.

This could be Holy Grail for the elderly if they would just stop thinking there is a pill for everything and waking up every morning asking themselves, "Where do I hurt today?"Dr. Hadler could be a motivational speaker for old folks if they would only listen! Sadly, he makes too much sense, Evahbody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to die. And our prescription drug society is going to see to it that we linger forever in a dismal rest home, or if we are "luckier" - the Senility Hilton.I will be 87 next month and have "looked at life from both sides now", and it will never be through a haze of pills with the label "May cause dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness....." Mercy! Elderly take all that and then wonder why they fall and break a hip. Not me!

I first read this book from my local library and found such good information in it that I bought it for my own reference. The book is written by a doctor with many years of experience and vast knowledge of medical studies. It warns of the current practice in America of over-treatment and over-medication of older people. Everyone over 65 should read this book!

A brilliant book and a must read for anyone at any age, especially those over 50. Have shared and recommended this book to everyone I know.If there is one book you should read, this is it.Dr. Hadler is an amazing writer and is clearly one of the preeminent thinkers of our time. If only there were more Dr. Hadler's in our world. You will not be disappointed and it will provide you with great insights for maintaining the quality of life we all desire.

Review

“If you’ve been there, no explanation is necessary. If you haven’t, none is adequate.” (Lou Holtz, head football coach, University of Notre Dame, 1986-1996)"Matt Cashore is a master of the visual art of photography. In this wonderful new book, he displays once again his love for Notre Dame by capturing the beauty of the place, the combination of natural preservation and human construction. We see those places, angles of sight, and events that spark our imagination and recall moments in each of our personal histories." (Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., president emeritus, University of Notre Dame)“Now Notre Dame Press has collected Cashore’s images into one volume conveying the beauty, character and spirit of the University, accompanied by text from Temple, an astute University observer and writer whose articles and essays have chronicled the nature, traditions and growth of Notre Dame over the past four decades.” (NDWorks)"They have spent a combined six decades chronicling the University. In this coffee-table book, Cashore, the senior University photographer, and Temple, editor of this magazine, offer a visual and literary reflection on the institutional evolution they have witnessed firsthand, offering their perspectives on the campus landmarks, traditions and people who make up this place called Notre Dame." (Notre Dame Magazine)"Matt Cashore and Kerry Temple bring to This Place Called Notre Dame a depth of knowledge about the university shared by few people. Through the striking photography and engaging prose, we see 'old Notre Dame' in new and illuminating ways. In their pictures and words, Notre Dame comes alive as it is today―and even echoes awaken." (Robert Schmuhl, author of Fifty Years with Father Hesburgh)"'I hope if you're a visitor to Notre Dame that it really helps capture the place in all the seasons and all the ways that maybe you didn't have a chance to see in a weekend here,' Cashore said. 'And if you are an alum, I hope it brings back whatever special memories you might have of a dorm or a place or an event. I hope it reconnects you with Notre Dame." (WNDU.com)“When I'm distant from campus, when I'm missing Our Lady, when I'm craving a dose of the dome, I turn to the photos of Matt Cashore and the words of Kerry Temple. Now, thankfully, I have a book that pairs them, soulfully and insightfully, no farther away than my coffee table. This is a necessary book for anyone lucky enough to find a home at Notre Dame. " (Beth Ann Fennelly, '93, Poet Laureate of Mississippi)

The first one came with a big scratch on the cover but I was able to return it and got a new one the next day. Beautiful coffee table book for any ND fan! GO IRISH!

Book was given to a ND University grad for Christmas. He couldn't put it down.

Matt Cashore worked for me as a photojournalist many years ago. He was an excellent photographer then, and has continued to get better over time. This is a collection of Matt's first-rate photos of the Notre Dame University campus, with accompanying text by Kerry Temple. Got myself an autographed copy at the authors' book signing on campus.

Incredible work from Matt Cashore

Chen Jian's works on China's rise to international power are groundbreaking books exploiting Chinese (and Soviet too) source materials and interviews. This book follows along the same pattern established in his 1994 book, "China's Road to the Korean War," which argues that Mao's ideological commitment to the social and political revolution forecasted, even guaranteed, a shooting conflict with the United States. In Mao's China and the Cold War, Chen goes further in his analysis, demonstrating that it was Mao's worldview and determination to make China the central figure in the international Communist movement that was the driving force behind China's many foreign entanglements: Korea, First and Second Indo-China Wars, Taiwan Strait Crisis, the sundering of the brotherly alliance between Beijing and Hanoi, and the nearly fatal rift between Mao and Moscow. Chen deftly describes Mao's concern for "continuous revolution," and the fear that reactionary movements abroad would influence the Chinese population at home. Of equal concern to Mao was the effort to harness the people's enthusiasm for ultimately disasterous endeavors, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Chen shows that Mao accomplished these "mobilizations" and maintained his grip on power by demonizing first the United States, then the Soviet Union. This form of politics served Mao well, allowing him to keep his supporters in check (even if he ended up purging them in the end) and his opponents disoriented. It even allowed him the freedom to make the compromise most surprising of all -- normalization of relations with the United States in the early '70s. Chen points out that even with this act, Mao was pursuing his goal of radicalizing his own movement, particulary vis-a-vis the Soviets. Ironic, then, that in permanently casting away from the Soviet-led bloc (to which Mao had more than once pledged allegiance), Mao nearly guaranteed the former's disintegration and went a long way to undermining international Communism's appeal world-wide.A bibliographical essay addressing each chapter enhances the usefulness of this book for students and those getting acquainted with the Far East during the Cold War.

This is an interesting perspective of what Mao's perspective of the Cold War looked like and the thaw of Sino-American Relations.

Chen Jian has written an insightful history of the role China played in the Cold War from the time of Mao Zedong's rise to power and the Communist victory in 1949 to the resumption of cordial relations with the United States in 1969-72. Chen argues that Chinese foreign policy during the Maoist Era was driven by Mao's ideology of "continuous revolution," and that Mao cultivated, and then exploited, a "victim mentality" in the populace in order to mobilize his people whenever necessary. This continuous revolution included an ongoing push for an international proletarian movement and called for the eventual establishment of China's centrality to the movement. In addition, Mao believed that the eventual triumph of his Marxist revolution would garner China a place of prestige in the international community. By focusing on nine transnational events, Chen shows how China's foreign policy was informed by this Maoist doctrine and how Mao would redefine terms, when necessary, to keep his revolution relevant to the current state of world affairs. The nine events that Chen analyzes are the Chinese Civil War, the dissolution of U.S.-Sino diplomatic channels, the deterioration of the Sino-Soviet alliance, China's role in the Korean, the first Indochina, and the Vietnam War; the Polish and Hungarian crises, the Taiwan Strait crises, and the Sino-American rapprochement. Chen weaves the theme of Mao's continuous revolution throughout the book and supports his thesis with an impressive amount of source material. In fact, there are nearly one hundred pages of sources and citations, some of which are recently declassified Chinese documents as well as Soviet documents made available after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, newly released primary documents make up the smallest portion of Chen's source material, and much of the remaining documentation is information that was already readily available.Chen evenhandedly examines China's involvement in Cold War events, seeking to prove his thesis rather than take sides or place blame regarding controversial events. However, as regards the scholarly debate among historians of "America's lost chance" in maintaining a non-confrontational relationship with Mao's China, Chen firmly places himself on the side of those who insist that such a lost chance is a myth. According to Chen, a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to the inner dynamics of Mao's ideology. Since the opposition camp Chen refers to bases its position on what Washington could have done differently (which, according to Chen's thesis is irrelevant), Chen charges that the proponents of the lost chance theory are operating on an ethnocentric methodology. China's foreign policy, Chen maintains, was designed to ameliorate Mao's revolution and was not simply a reaction to U.S. policy towards China.Interestingly, Chen can also be accused of operating from an ethnocentric methodology. He presents his argument that a CCP-American accommodation was impossible due to Mao's ideology, but as William Appleman Williams has argued in The Tragedy of American Diplomacy, Americans were operating under an ideology of their own during that same period. The American ideology during this time frame, according to Williams, included the belief that American values were Divinely-ordained universal values and therefore any other worldview was not just wrong-headed, but evil. Williams cites several instances in American history where this "good verses evil" ideology informed American foreign policy. Hence, it can be argued that a Sino-American accommodation was impossible due to American, not Maoist, ideology. This view also challenges scholars that allege that Sino-American relations were made impossible due to tactical misjudgments and simple errors in policy-making by Washington.Throughout the book, as Chen examines the ideological motivations behind Mao's political decisions, he refrains from either idealizing or vilifying the Chairman. While this neutrality towards Mao's actions is commendable in many respects, it also leaves important questions unanswered. For example, a scant two sentences are devoted to the introduction and explanation of both the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the ensuing Anti-Rightist movement. These were brutal and tragic policies in the history of Mao's leadership, with extreme political ramifications, and as such, they deserved a measure of analysis in Mao's China.Another reason that the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement should have received more coverage is because they have a direct bearing on Chen's thesis that Mao's political decisions were based on ideology. Many historians believe that Mao deliberately instituted the campaign to get political dissidents to identify themselves so they could subsequently be purged. It could be argued that because the violence directed at the so-called rightists followed the Polish and Hungarian crises and coincided with the de-Stalinization process in Russia, Mao was making decisions based on threats to his personal power and dictatorial style of government, and not on his ideology. At the very least, Chen could have explained how the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist movement fit into the overall scheme of Mao's ideology. The fact that Chen glosses over these major events and does not address the questions they raise makes him appear remiss in his scholarship; at worst, he can be accused of only presenting evidence that supports his thesis. A similar problem exists regarding the coverage of the Great Leap Forward. Though Chen makes it abundantly clear that Mao believed in the superiority of his ideology, he does not elaborate on how Mao could continue to believe this in light of millions of Chinese deaths as a result of his Great Leap Forward and other policies. How did Mao interpret the failures of his policies and the deaths of his people as he put his ideology into practice? How did he reconcile his utopian aims and the reality his policies created? Mao's China does not answer these significant questions.Chen's treatment of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement is one of the book's strengths. Traditional scholarship typically focuses on the deteriorating Sino-Soviet relationship and the advantageous strategic and geopolitical aspects that reconciliation with the United States would afford China. This approach explains why a Sino-U.S. reconciliation would have been valuable to China, but Chen explains how Mao made such a political about-face possible. According to Chen, Mao viewed the rapprochement with an eye to reinvigorating his declining internal political power. By redefining or inventing terms Mao was able to justify seeking friendly relations with the U.S.--the nation that, for two decades, he had declared to be his movement's primary enemy. For example, even though the Soviet Union was clearly communist, Mao announced that capitalism had been restored to the Soviet Union and redefined Soviet Russia as a "social-imperialist country." He then declared that this type of imperialism was more dangerous than the United States' variety. By reclassifying the Soviet Union, Mao could justify banding together with a less dangerous foe in a united front against China's new primary enemy, the Soviet Union. In this way, a Sino-American rapprochement was made compatible with Mao's ideology. In addition, by deleting the Soviet Union from the brotherhood of Marxist countries, China, in Mao's eyes, would become central to the cause. The status brought to China and the CCP by being recognized by the U.S., and soon after by the U.N., also helped to fulfill Mao's goal of a prestigious international position for China. For Mao, the Sino-American rapprochement produced positive forward momentum and progress for his Marxist revolution.Overall, Mao's China and the Cold War accomplishes its aims by illuminating the role that ideology played in Chinese foreign policy during the Cold War. Readers will find Chen's coverage of the evolution of the Chinese position leading up to the rapprochement enlightening, and other sections of book, such as the section on "ping pong diplomacy," light-hearted and very entertaining. The book is well-written and very readable, making it ideal for a general audience or anyone desiring a general understanding and overview of Maoist China.Seasoned scholars may take issue with the fact that Chen oversimplifies at times, and at others he presents only one side. For example, Chen cites the Sino-American rapprochement as a major incident that led to the wholesale collapse of the Soviet Union. This is overly simplistic in light of the fact that Chen does not go into detail regarding the multi-casual factors that, in fact, resulted in the Soviet downfall. And as regards events leading up to the Sino-American rapprochement, Chen does an excellent job of revealing Mao's thinking and reasoning, but he does not develop the concurrent evolution of the U.S. side of the story. The book would have been enhanced by explaining the changes in the U.S. perspective. For example, a central issue for the Truman administration was the mutually exclusive American and communist worldview and their irreconcilable economic systems, but the Cold War as well as domestic issues shaped the Nixon administration into a security-focused government. Developing these contextual issues could shed light on the American contribution to paving the way for the reinstitution of diplomatic relations with China.Even still, Mao's China and the Cold War is an excellent contribution to the historiography of the Cold War.

Chen Jian's book for a number of years has been the standard "must read" text for any student of modern Chinese history. An excellent example of "new Cold War" scholarship, the book makes excellent use of newly available Chinese primary sources and secondary materials to explain policy making of the PRC leadership. The book's central argument is that Mao's endless pursuit of "continous revolution" in China defined his priorities in foreign policy, so that essentially a confrontational foreign policy became a necessary backdrop to domestic political developments. The argument has its own critics; one may argue, for instance, that the domestic politics first approach is unduly Sino-centric, and ignores the dynamic of China's relationship with other powers, notably the US and the USSR. But for better or worse, Chen Jian's argument cannot be ignored. The book is nicely written, and I had my undergraduate students digest it with apparent ease. Highly recommended.

Mao's envy on the economic success of the now defunct USSR resulted to the classic exchange of thoughts through letters between the two great communist society leaders. this book contains all Mao's arguments on why USSR would not be considered as a socialist state.
