This really helped me understand my friend who has this disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder, DID). It's amazing how much the author was able to accomplish in life before he even realized he had a disorder. He's courageously honest in telling about, and taking responsibility for, the harm he caused. I also appreciate that this doesn't have one of those "and now everything's totally fine" endings -- this one is more realistic, making clear that things can improve *and* one can cope with ongoing mental-health issues.By the way, to anyone who has heard that this isn't a real disorder: while it's true that some incompetent therapists influenced some patients to believe they had multiple personalities when they really didn't, that in no way means that there aren't people really suffering from this. Skepticism is healthy and valuable, but it must be balanced with open mindedness.

Recently diagnosed with DID, I started with his book and I really enjoyed taking this journey with Bob. It gives me a lot of hope as I face my own unknown journey. I think it gives very good insight into the mind of one with DID and is a good read for anyone wanting a peak inside the mind of a multiple.

I read this book a few months ago and initially did a review of it for my news letter. For several years I have been fascinated with Dissociative Identity Disorder and have read many books and case studies about it over time. I was intrigued with "A fractured mind"and how the remaining three alters of the author collaborated to write an inside account of this disorder. Robert B. Oxnam was not the first one whose alters collaborated to write a book about his experiences with it. I am sure several people can recall Truddi Chases long book " When Rabbit Holwes" which was Authored by Truddi and The Troops, which is what she called her inner system. Truddi Chase had ninety alter personalities. Anyway, back to the book A fractured Mind. What I think certain critics should understand is that when dealing with a book written by a person with DID you are not hearing or reading the voice of just one person or author. You are hearing /reading the voice of what could be several authors. One person who complained about the profanity used in A Fractured Mind should have taken this fact into account. It was not the "voice" of Robert B.Oxnam that was using profanity but that of one of his Alters. Probably it was the voice of one of the angry ones. It could have been the Witch or Tommy. It could have been the internal voice that Oxnam took in from one of his abusers as the witch was. Robert Oxnam internalized his abusers messages and that is how the witch was created. The Witch was the voice and image of one of the people who abused him. The abuser who claimed to be a witch when she abused him. His being so young at the time he believed her and didn't know that she was lying to him about being a witch just to frighten a young boy into submission. I believe even after a person with DID has been integrated that it is still impossible to access all the painful memories of the abuse that caused the condition in the first place. We all have internal filters that block and repress memories that are perhaps too painful and detrimental for our psyches to handle. I do not have DID but I also do not have a full range of memories of my childhood. Whether or not to integrate or to work towards integration is an extremely personal choice for the person who has DID and the process can be very painful and long from what I have read about it. Some people with this condition do choose to cooperate with each individual alter rather than integrate into one personality while others choose to go the route of integration. Whatever the decision or choice of the person with DID he should not be scrutanized for it and his choice of therapy should be respected. As fascinating as this condition is it is extremely difficult to live with and deal with. I think those with DID who have written reviews for this book should support each persons' odyssey into wholeness or cooperation rather than pick a part one persons story and journey. Everyone with DID should intergrate with each other and support one another as this condition needs all the understanding, compassion and empathy it can get as well as the people who have to live with it. I fully enjoyed and was fascinated with a Fractured Mind. Also I should stress that A fractured Mind is a book meant for Adults and not children. The subject matter and nature of the abuse suffered by the author when he was a baby maybe too difficult for children to read. There is nothing pleasant about child abuse or abuse of any form and to require the author to clean up the language of one of his alters would not do justice to the book and his story. In fact to do so would take a way some of the validity of the book and the authors story and experiences. I for one highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what the world is really like to some and not a cleaned up version of it. I was simply fascinated by Robert B. Oxnam's book and I think those with an open mind would be too.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in Dissociative Identity Disorder, Professionals, or people who live with the disorder. Dr. Oxnam's book has stood the test of time because he has managed to write a book that tells his story of his multiple selves from their perspectives without confusing the reader. Allowing a glimpse into what it is like to realize you have DID, the process of therapy, and healing. Amazing book. Thank you, Dr. Oxnam.

The book was well written. I am a therapist so I can really appreciate the details into the mind and how it was able to integrate as well as the limitations of it. I was suprised to read very little detail into the actual abuse, however. This is a direct link and root of the split and it would be interesting to know, in this particular case the time and thinking at the point of dissociation. I am impressed with the strength and creativity of the mind and how it constructs to survive. I had many emotions come up throughout this book but all along wondering how someone can reach the age of 60 before gaining some insight into such disturbing pathology, without having a healthy or unhealthy dose of Narcissism.Also wondering why there was little mention of his family; his previous wife and children. I would imagine that this would be tremendous source of objectivity of this condition. I realize this book was written to understand "inside" the mind on MPD however, I would think that the family who had to endure the range of emotions and "switches" would be just as painful, confusing & difficult. There was very little acknowlegment to the family left in the wake of all these personalities. As if they were dicarded so he could begin his "healing" journey, become "well" and meet and marry someone else who accepts him!?!Who was the father to his children? Who was the husband to his wife? where are they? How are they?I would be very interested in reading their story.

Fascinating book about the life of a PhD with eleven personalities! A must read for anyone with a friend or family member with MPD, or for students of Psychology or Counseling.

Very interesting read, helps shed light on the patient/survivors experience.

Excellent Book! The author gave a very realistic account of his life with multiple personalities. He described in very specific detail the very personal events that occurred for him and how he came to live with the disorder and the treatment he received.

She knew her parents would have dropped everything and come home if they knew, so she took this job to pay the increased rent.Miss Cheryl dragged Amaya into the changing room, makeup room, and outfit room to find something to focus on her most alluring qualities. Amaya’s old waitressing job was starting to look better to her with each step of this process. But Miss Cheryl explained that the dress-up and role play attracts the vampires. They can get blood anywhere, but the added attraction here increased business and brought in much more money.The vampire Vasily is her first customer. He asks her very strange questions – he seems to know who she is. He leads her upstairs, despite her protest, telling her he can take her where he chooses. But she tells him again she doesn’t want to go upstairs. He agreed, but told her he wants her exclusively and will pay for her time permanently. She is to not allow any other vampire to drink from her. And he told her that he would be bringing friends who would want to meet her.As Amaya sits in a window seat waiting to see if she can go home yet, another vampire approaches. His eyes show menace and he roughly grabs her arm and pulls her to her feet. He wants her and wants the “extra”, whatever that is. When she refuses, he throws her over his shoulder and drops her onto a bed. Throwing money on the bureau, he tells her to strip; and when she refuses, he decides to make it rough and take her anyway. She screams, scratches his face, and he slaps her hard. How will she escape from this danger? He is so much stronger than she and his red eyes show his fury.I was drawn in by this exciting series. There is an air of mystery as we learn of a strange, unexplained encounter Amaya has as a child – where we realize there is something different about her. Vasily’s reaction to her is also mysterious since he seems to know more than expected about Amaya and is very protective. I definitely recommend this exciting adventure.

I have read everything produced about Distant Edge so far. So, simply by being about one of my favorite places, this had my attention. I love getting the opportunity to see Distant Edge from the human vantage point. We’ve seen the Signum and now we get to see what life is like without a wealth of magical powers. There are so many wonderful little hints about what’s going on sprinkled throughout this book. But for every hint and answer that’s uncovered, three more questions spring up to take its place. We have answers, but there are still questions left unknown, so I’m guessing that we will be revisiting Amaya, Vasily, the warlocks, Candy, Sabin, Jules, and all the rest again in the future.I received a complimentary copy of this book.

I feel like this book just plays with the edge of being a great novel. The author starts the world building right away. I’m truly expecting a well developed world and a deep understanding of the creatures/characters introduced. I’m not sure what happened, but it seems like I barely got to know anyone other than Amaya. I’m not even sure why she likes anyone in the book other than Jules. Even then, Jules seemed to have a minor role.Really, I think the book was too thin. If the author had gone back and added more substance to the novel, I think she could have stayed true to the story line but developed the characters more thoroughly. It would have made the interpersonal relationships more believable. As it is, I couldn’t get how she went from hating someone in one chapter to friendly in the next without even an interaction. Or how she goes from meeting perfect strangers to allowing them to kiss on her, like there’s been a romantic build up, when she’s only seems to see them in passing. All unnatural in my opinion.I was also expecting a reverse harem. This isn’t one at all. It ends in a cliffhanger, which I don’t like... especially for a first book. With the small size of the book, she could have spent more time finishing it off. Very little was resolved and the quest was too easy.WHAT I LIKE: As I mentioned, it has a great start to the world building... could use more development on both realms. The fae realm reminds me a bit of Xanth (Piers Anthony) without all the puns and True Blood without all the gore violence. I love the idea of shifters, vampires, and warlocks. I’m not a fan of the fae but interested in how the species interact, nonetheless.I also love a Black heroine. She gives a perspective on the world that I imagine a lot of non-Black individuals don’t see or consciously acknowledge, but is very real to Blacks. She’s relatable. The author does a decent job of touching on racial subjects without sugar coating it but also not turning the focus of the book into a Black versus them journey.I’m on the fence about starting the next book in the series. This book had potential but it seemed to lack full development. I question if the next book will lead me more to the same. I definitely don’t want a cliffhanger when little has happened. I’ll think about it and maybe start something different in the meantime.

I'm pretty fascinated with bats, especially after observing these giant "cat-faced" bats that move in trees like monkeys outside my apartment in Okinawa. So this book is exciting, even though it hadn't occurred to me to seek out a book on bats, and I had no idea how many types of bats there are!Unfortunately, my copy is an uncorrected proof (which is odd in an illustrated book like this), so I have trouble guessing what the pictures are going to look like in the final version, and obviously the pictures are a very important part of the book. But even in the B&W pics, it is really pretty cool to see such up-close photos of so many different bats - you can see just how diverse different species look. You get a lot of head shots, from the side, and then there are also some action shots of (what I'm guessing are) colorful or large or otherwise exceptionally interesting bats. The pictures look weird in my edition, and I can't tell what is because they are B&W and what is because they probably had to be shot with night vision. But my guess is the book is going to be awesome (even quite cool in the edition I have) so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.The writing is very straightforward and almost scientific (i.e., slightly dry) - exactly what you expect (and probably even want) in a book like this. It surprised me that it wasn't split up by world region, but rather by family, genus, and species. This makes sense when you realize just how many bats there are in the world, and also because they can fly and migrate to different parts of the world. There are some intros to families and genera before the pic and description of a few species from the group that was just intro'ed (note that not every species has its own picture or section). It also tells you how threatened each species is, if at all.Very cool book.

I was seduced by the beautiful color cover of Marianne Taylor’s Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species.For me, Merlin D. Tuttles’ photographs dominate the book with their clarity and uniqueness. Bats in their infinite variety and in such clear pictures. The advance copy that I am reading has black and white photographs, but the back cover promises ‘full color photographs.’ Even the black and whites are riveting, but potential purchasers should check this aspect.Taylor provides an informative introduction with summaries of bat research, their evolution, diversity, biology, behavior, ecology, and bats and people.She then goes on to list and describe bats.This is a classification guide and not a book about bats. The back cover promises a ‘lively narrative.’ I can’t find it. What I do find for the majority of the book is serious important information about bats listed by genus and species.I don’t want to lower the rating of this book because the publisher’s PR department failed to give an honest depiction of the book on the back cover.Taylor and Tuttle created a beautiful, informative book.

This is a comprehensive survey of all the known bat species, with basic and not-so-basic facts about each family and each species. Accompanied by what are probably lovely pictures...but I can't judge that well as my review copy is in black and white. So I'll bet it's a stunning book, but have to take off a star because I can't tell.Still, the information is clearly presented and well organized. The black and white versions of the pictures are clear and well composed. The reading comprehension level is not for little kids, but middle school and above who are interested in biology can probably handle it.

I know, its a corny title for a review But that should not detract from the fact "Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species" is the definitive guide to bats. The photos look great. The information is carefully detailed so the reader has a greater understanding of bats.If you or someone you love are interested in bats, "Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species" you should definitely buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

This illustrated book of bat species seems to be very comprehensive. I looked through it myself and was very intrigued. I'm just waiting for my niece to see it. She is a huge fan of bats! I know she will love reading it and looking at all of the beautiful photos.

This book is very intersting, it shows you the hows and the why Witsec was created. Not to mention the who's, such as Shur. It also clears a lot of misconceptions people had, I thought Witsec gave you money forever, it turns out it's only for a while, until you find full-employment. It's not a welfare program.This book also helped me see, in my opinion, what a despicable person Geraldo Rivera was, and to the writer's credit, he did give Geraldo a chance to respond and he did, but as usual, he did not acknowledge the fake, agenda-driven "journalism" he had engaged in. It also helped me understand that Witsec not only protects the bad guys but the good guys as well, the wife and kids of the criminals. In the end, I agree with the author who credits Witsec for destroying the mafia. It's true that before Witsec, people were afraid to testify, now they aren't.

Witsec was the perfect help for the research I needed to do in writing my novel. I think anyone would find it an interesting read. Setting the program up was no simple thing, nor is it a pleasant solution for those who have to enter it (though preferable to death at the hand of their enemies!). Very informative, very interesting, and gives you huge appreciation for how it helps bring criminals to justice by preserving the lives of witnesses.

Witsec is a synopsis, if u will of Gerald Shur's Carrier of 34 years. It 's fun to read. It also gives a brief understanding of how things work between the FBI, Marshalls & DEA. ALSO it gives us the Public an understanding of what US Marshall Service 's all about. I did learn a lot. The book 's well put together with the help of the Journalist Pete Early. The Book 's a Good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

Witsec is the most exciting book I've ever read next to Dan Brown's series. Although the names and locations have been changed for protection, this book is the only book I've ever read which speaks about the Witness Protection program ran by the US Marshals Service. This book gives an outstanding history on how Witness Protection was created, the struggles for approval, what they did while the program was fully implemented, and how it's used today. I really enjoyed reading about the stories on how people's live were affected by the Witness Protection Program and how big criminals were and can be taken down and dismantled. For those interested in a career with the US Marshals or the FBI, I would highly recommend reading this book. It's worth every penny.

This may have made a fairly good read as a magazine story.The IDEA was great.The first few chapters were pretty interesting, but later it couldnot hold my interest.Maybe I expected something else. I hate to pan a writer as I knowhow much work it takes to complete a saleable book.

Interesting and easy read. Hard for any start-up, but harder when the largest element is people. Just enough info to give you an inside view without being bogged down in bureaucratic or messy detail. ++

To understand WITSEC as it exists today, you need to know its history. There's no better place to find that than the book co-authored by its founder, Gerald Shur. I read WITSEC as a writer who wanted to portray witness protection as realistically as possible. This book was helpful in that regard, but it was also a fascinating read.

Pete Earley is one of my all time favorite authors. I just started reading this one last night. It's going very fast. It's hard to put down once you start. It's most interesting that Pete Earley collaborated with Shur -- it's really a good thing. So far, anything I've read written by Pete Earley hasn't disappointed me. He writes extrememly well -- gets his point across, etc.
