Review

From the reviews:The new book Fast Fourier Transform - Algorithms and Applications by Dr. K.R. Rao, Dr. D.N. Kim, and Dr. J.J. Hwang is an engaging look in the world of FFT algorithms and applications. This book not only provides detailed description of a wide-variety of FFT algorithms, gives the mathematical derivations of these algorithms, plentiful helpful flow diagrams illustrating the algorithms, and MATLAB programsthe book also presents novel topics in depth (for example, integer FFTs, the non-uniform DFT, phase-only correlation, image and audio watermarking, the curvelet transform, and many more) with insightful motivation, explanation, and numerous examples and programs. The authors also provide insight into issues related to implementation of FFTs on different hardware platforms. Excellent aspects of the book are the plentiful numerical examples illustrating the properties of the DFT and a most impressive number of applications of the FFT- including applications in communications, image restoration, and descriptions of audio coding standards that rely on the FFT (MPEG, AC-2) to name only a few. The book also supplies a generous number of exercises and computer projects. In addition, throughout the book the authors present and discuss the research literature at length and include many healthy doses of pointers to the literature which provides a pathway for specialized further study.Dr. Ivan W. Selesnick, Polytechnic University, New York, NY“The fast Fourier transform (FFT) is an essential tool in applied mathematics and digital signal processing. … This monograph on the FFT is mainly written for graduate students and researchers in engineering and science. It consists of 8 chapters, 8 appendices and a comprehensive bibliography.” (Manfred Tasche, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1203, 2011)“This volume … offers an account of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and its implementation, including the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The target audience is clearly instructors and students in engineering … . book gives an excellent opportunity to applied mathematicians interested in refreshing their teaching to enrich their presentation of the DFT/FFT with modern applications. The exercises and projects … are one of the most important feature of this volume. This is in itself a clear motivation to strongly recommend this volume … .” (Jean-Pierre Croisille Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2012 k)

#384,062 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I first encountered Catherynne M Valente's work in her fabulous Orphan's Tales series- which I highly recommend. For some reason I was under the impression that Palimpsest was her first novel, but it turns out she wrote it well after Orphan's Tales and to be honest that changes my perception of it a bit. Compared to some of her other work it felt like she was just finding her voice. That's not necessarily a bad quality (it's certainly reassuring to a young person just finding their artistic voice), but it's not what you would expect of something so far into an author's career. Edit: to be clear, I've read a bunch of Valente's work and I actually think Palimpsest is better than her average. I'm just describing certain a quality to the writing here.Anyway, what I loved: The four main characters were very well developed. Sei, November, and Oleg all had deep and affecting back stories that did a lot to inform their actions later in the story. Ludovico's characterization was a bit weaker, but certainly not bad. I loved the descriptive and metaphorical language though I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. The sex/romance elements were not at all heteronormative and there weren't any relationships that seemed obligatory or not justified by the rest of the story. It also doesn't have any sexual abuse or unacknowledged sexism-- annoyingly rare in current media-that-contains-sex-scenes. Contrary to many of the negative reviews, there is a plot, it's just that the plot is unexpectedly simple compared to the complex language it's written in and it's based more in personal discovery than in action. The structure of the plot was very well done. The gender balance seemed pretty equal or even tipped more towards female characters. Most of the characters seemed to be bisexual, so it's not heteronormative, though I know some lesbians who might object that their same-sex-exclusive attraction is being erased by the implication that everyone can be bi- I'm not going to get into those politics here.Things I didn't like so much: yes, every chapter has a sex scene. The first four chapters (or is it the 2nd-5th? there might be a prologue, I forget) all largely revolve around their respective sex scenes. If I wasn't already familiar with the author or if I didn't trust her I might have put it down after that because personally I find sex scenes boring and overdone and I'm tired of how so much media targeted for adults revolves around sex these days. Later in the book, however, the sex scenes become less important since the things going on in Palimpsest and in the real world become more important and prominent. Given the premise that sex is how one gets to Palimpsest, I can't see how she could have avoided having the sex scenes, so I guess they're kind of a necessary "evil" (in quotation marks because I'm not a puritan or whatever). So I guess just know that if the sex scenes at the start of the book bother you, they will pass. And no, this isn't erotica. The sex scenes aren't super graphic. They're written in poetic language but not in an especially sexy way. Even for the characters, the sex isn't necessarily especially pleasurable, much of the time their main concern is getting into Palimpsest. To properly appreciate this book you have to be able to take in sex scenes pretty neutrally- without outrage or discomfort and also without expecting to get off on them yourself. I expect this cuts back on who will find the book to their taste.

I was surprised by how bad this book is. I really liked this author's western reimagining of Snow White, my kids read her fairy tale, and I recently saw this listed on a reputable website as one of the 100 best fantasy novels of all time. As you know by now, it is the story of an alternate fantasy world that one may reach only by having sex with someone who has been there, and who is marked with a tattoo. But every fantasy novel has some way of reaching the imaginary world at issue - a wardrobe, for example - and so this is really just a gimmick. Once we get to the imaginary world, how good is the story? Well, in this case, not very good, just sort of overblown formless descriptions with no driving plot, and an overuse of the word "great" instead of "big." If I had to describe a plot, I guess I would say it's about a group of farflung characters, each of which is trying to gain permanent entry to a mysterious, sexual dreamworld. The problem is this: Everyone wants to get there, but it's not clear why; it's a pretty wretched, sadistic place, and the characters go through all manner of hell there, from full-body bee stings to dismemberment (fingers and tongues). I wouldn't voluntarily lose my tongue to live in a penthouse overlooking Central Park, and I definitely wouldn't lose my tongue to get a pad in the horrible fantasy world described in this book. There are some nice characterizations and diversions along the way, but the central conceit is not successful.

Palimpsest is the story of a sexually transmitted city, and of four such pilgrims who each encounter the city and find that they need to return. The pilgrims are residents of the world as we-the-readers know it, but Palimpsest is built on fairy logic and surrealism. The author describes the city and its inhabitants with lush language and vivid imagery, anchored by the deep, emotional truths that govern Palimpsest’s world as surely as the laws of physics govern our own. If the mark of a great storyteller is the ability to tell you things you know to be untrue and then make your heart believe in them anyway, then Catherynne Valente is a master of the craft. The city of Palimpsest thrives on human need. Those who have visited are left with a gut-deep yearning that slowly leaches the color out of the rest of the world. Palimpsest is a compulsion – the kind of desire that the Buddha warned you about. Possibly someone who is perfectly satisfied with their life on Earth would not feel such need to return as the four protagonists do, but perfection is boring; the flaws and scars and traumas that the characters carry back and forth between our world and Palimpsest are as compelling as the city itself, and just as richly detailed. Palimpsest and all its wonders draw the readers into the book and tantalize us with possibilities, but ultimately it’s the loss and need and loneliness of November, Ludovico, Sei, and Oleg that compel us to stay and see their journey through to the end. Along the way we get to make sense of Palimpsest itself, as the disparate, absurd details we have learned get slowly and satisfyingly knotted together into a cohesive whole.I could say so much more about the book, but ultimately my own words will fall short, and if you haven’t read it you deserve the opportunity to discover all of Palimpsest’s secrets for yourself.

This book is not a critique of string theory, and it is not a condemnation of string theorists. He makes this clear at several points throughout the book, but the amount of time he spends criticizing string theory has led some people to believe that this book is an "anti" book to balance the spate of "pro" string theory books. In reality, this is a book about science and the nature of science. This is clear in the acknowledgments, where Smolin describes how he originally wanted to write a book on the relationship of democracy and science and settled on applying this thesis in a particular situation- that of string theory. The book is absolutely fascinating the whole way through. Along the way, one gets lessons in physics without the advanced mathematics- but one can feel Smolin's passion for both. Quantum theory and the nature of quantum theory is explained well, and the underlying principles which appear to contradict relativity are illumined clearly. What really makes this book, though, is Smolin's own deep understanding of scientific reasoning, both in its strengths and weaknesses. Smolin reveals to us a world far more open than we had ever imagined- he describes a great variety of solutions to the problem of quantum gravity, including his own personal favorite, quantum loop gravity. He describes the way that science changed in between Einstein and the present. In the early days of 20th century physics, the great physicists- Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg- also had astute philosophical minds, and their trade was deep reflection on the underlying nature of reality. Physics served that greater project. After this period, however, physics entered into a more pragmatic stage, where the emphasis lay in ensuring that the equations worked out. Smolin makes clear that he is not criticizing this mode- indeed, he says that such pragmatism is needed in some periods. It produced the extremely successful standard model of particle physics. But we have now moved past such a need. For issues like quantum gravity, we need philosophical minds like Einstein and Bohr to fundamentally consider the nature of reality. In the midst of all this, Smolin describes the rise of string theory- a potentially promising unification of the forces and particles which sees all of them as manifestations of vibrating strings. The problem with string theory is that what it does predict- supersymmetry, eleven dimensions, and so on- have no evidence. The other problem is that besides this, it doesn't make predictions. There are so many solutions to the equations of string theory that one can adjust the freely varying constants to save the theory from falsification. Smolin points to earlier theories in physics which suffered the same problems- most interestingly, the Kaluza-Klein model of electromagnetism, a mathematically beautiful theory which posited that just as gravitation described the four dimensions of spacetime, electromagnetism described a curled up fifth dimension. The difficulty with these concepts is that relativity is background independent. Instead of moving against a fixed spatial background, gravity describes the warps and curves of the space itself. The Kaluza-Klein model and string theory is background dependent- that is, in trying to reconcile relativity with quantum theory, it fails to integrate the most fundamental insight of the former.Smolin argues that the funding going to string theory is taking away from other creative thinkers, and in exploring why, he refers to the philosopher of science Paul Feyerabend, who argued in "Against Method" that there wasn't a fixed scientific method. Instead, he proposed that science develops through "scientific anarchy" where different scientists pursue their hunches for different reasons. Smolin uses this to encourage reform of the tenure and peer-review system, which has benefits, but which is presently discouraging innovation. If one needs to be cited as much as possible in order to acquire tenure, then one won't work in a new, upstart project with only a few people working with you- because others who are uninterested won't cite you. Smolin is one of the few scientists who has a real, and not merely nominal, respect for philosophy and the philosophy of science. This is very refreshing. One point was rather odd, however, and led me to roll my eyes several times. In various places throughout the book, Smolin will take a shot at intelligent design, using it as an example of "bad science." He doesn't critique it, but merely mentions it in passing. But the critique that Smolin levels at the scientific industry is exactly that which proponents of ID have leveled. Everything he said could be quoted verbatim by them. And shouldn't Feyerabend's principle of scientific anarchy allow proponents of ID to develop their research program in peace? This is the logical conclusion of everything that Smolin has argued, and the ritual denunciation of ID was irritating.Regardless, this is a wonderful book, and I commend it to anybody who wants to understand physics, or science itself, more deeply.

This is the first book I have read by Lee Smolin and I found it to be quite enlightening. He begins by introducing us to what he refers to as the five great problems in physics. He notes that “any theory that claims to be a fundamental theory of nature must answer each one of them.” They relate to quantum gravity, problems in quantum mechanics, unification of forces and particles, the free constants in the standard model, and dark matter and dark energy. He then discusses the quest for unification going back to the work of Herman Weyl, who invented the modern concept of unification which eventually led to string theory. We learn of the work of Nordstrom, Theodor Kaluza, Oskar Klein, and Hendrik Lorentz, and the early work on the concept of extra dimensions. This work set the stage for the science of unification of the four fundamental forces of nature – electromagnetism, weak force, strong force, and gravity. The difference in the forces today arises, as we learn, from spontaneous symmetry breaking. The idea of a grand unification sought to find a symmetry between the quarks (ruled by strong force) and leptons (ruled by electroweak force). This symmetry came to be known as SU(5). But it was soon learned that something call supersymmetry could provide a way to unify the bosons (force particles) and the fermions (matter particles). Then there is the quandary called the hierarchy problem – the wildly differing strengths of the forces and the large differences in the masses of the particles. We then learn that supersymmetry may be important to understand why the Higgs maintains the weight it has, which is 120 times the mass of a proton. This research lead to something called the MSSM or minimally supersymmetric standard model. Smolin breaks all this stuff down nicely in an understandable fashion.Smolin carefully explains all the problems associated with the current understanding we have. For instance, the MSSM adds 105 free, adjustable constants to the already existing 20 of the standard model. In addition, we really don’t know why the particles have the values they have as they are determined experimentally. He notes that by 1974, “a background dependent approach to combining general relativity with quantum theory did not make sense.” We are then introduced to the next great thing: supergravity – could this provide the long sought answer? At the time of the writing of this book, Smolin felt that no one really understood what supersymmetry really meant. But a revolution was brewing in the name of a concept called string theory. Was this finally the answer to unification? Smolin explains the early history of the theory – how it required twenty-five dimensions, tachyons (particles that traveled faster than light), massless particles, and the omission of fermions. These problems were solved eventually and much progress was made on the theory. String theory came to provide an impressive list of accomplishments: unification of elementary particles, gauge fields, gravitons, and unification of bosons and fermions.A second revolution occurred around 1995. Here we are introduced to the concept of dualities – two different ways of looking at the same phenomenon. These dualities provided “relationships” between the five superstring theories that existed. These five theories became part of something called M-theory. Joseph Polchinski discovered that string theory was not just a theory of strings; he entertained the notion that other objects lived in the ten-dimensional spacetime. These objects came to be called D-branes. New relationships were discovered: between string and gauge theories and between branes and black holes. Smolin notes that “Our understanding expanded greatly following a set of fascinating, unprecedented results.” He realizes unfortunately that though M-theory remained a tantalizing conjecture and it was tempting to believe it, “it is not really a theory – it is a conjecture about a theory we would love to believe in.”In 1998, it was discovered that the expansion of the universe was accelerating. This required something called a positive cosmological constant – something string theory failed to predict. A crucial breakthrough occurred in 2003 by a group of scientists from Stanford. The problem now was that there were ten to the 500th power possible theories – yikes! As Smolin remarks, “If an attempt to construct a unique theory of nature leads instead to ten to the 500th power theories, that approach has been reduced to absurdity.” So it seems the string theorists are now ready to accept that there is a landscape containing a large number of theories. The history of science has seen many promising theories fail; could this be such a case, Smolin wonders. Particularly, if we find that supersymmetry, higher dimensions, or unification of the forces does not exist, then string theory would prove to be false. Perhaps, as Smolin posits, somebody in the future will formulate a string theory which will uniquely lead to the standard model of particle physics, will be background-independent, and will function in our three-dimensional non-supersymmetric world.Smolin now moves beyond string theory to discuss some very interesting phenomena. There is an interesting property of something called the cosmological constant which is referred to as the scale R. Combining this with a constant of nature gives us the speed of light squared divided by R. This is a special acceleration value that seems to be related to dark matter and the acceleration of stars found in galaxies; it is called Milgrom’s law, and it may have important consequences for Newton’s law of gravitation. Then there is the additional acceleration affecting the Pioneers 10 and 11 spacecraft pulling them toward the sun. In addition, something called the GZK prediction may even indicate a breakdown in special relativity at extreme energies – all fascinating stuff. There is some discussion about something called doubly special relativity II or DSR II. In this version of relativity, photons that have more energy travel faster; thus shortly after the big bang, when you had tremendous energy levels, light traveled much faster that it does today. This variable-speed-of-light theory is called Gravity’s Rainbow. Could this lead to the long sought quantum theory of gravity? Only time will tell.Smolin now gets into the sociology of the string theory community. He notes the fierce competition for places in research universities today, lamenting the difficulty for a creative person wanting to pursue their own research program to secure some kind of academic position. He wonders why “string theory, in spite of a dearth of experimental predictions, has monopolized the resources available to advance fundamental physics, thus choking off the investigation of equally promising alternative approaches.” This leads him to list seven unusual aspects of the string theory community, such as tremendous self-confidence, a sense of identification with the group, tendency to believe results because they are widely accepted and so on. This segues into a necessary discussion of what is science. He notes that science has succeeded because of “a community that is defined and maintained by adherence to a shared ethic.” He refers to the scientific community in the terms “ethical community” and “imaginative community” and proceeds to define these terms. Scientific progress can be slowed by orthodoxy and fashion; but as long as we have those who are willing to pursue competing ideas, it cannot not be stopped completely.Part of what tends to stifle innovative research is the fact that “you cannot get tenure in science at a U.S. research university if you haven’t been successful in getting grants, and you can’t get hired unless there is a likelihood that you will get grants.” Smolin sees as a solution the creation of small foundations that search out independent-minded seers who are working on their own approaches to theoretical problems, noting that the Royal Society in the United Kingdom has such a program. It has jump-started the careers of several scientists who now hold important positions in their fields. It seems like we need a better system to produce the breakthrough developments that will move us forward in our quest to understand the universe we live in. Will we solve the five great problems in physics? Only time will tell; I hope so!

A fascinating work of deconstruction, describing how theoretical physicists have wandered afield over the past thirty years piling untested and indeed unfalsifiable speculation upon speculation into a towering edifice of all but metaphysical hypotheses with little to show for all the effort and expense at the end. Smolin ably sets up his premise in the first chapter, defining the five major problems confronting theoretical physics, but then (probably inevitably) goes into such detail valiantly trying to describe in words what is really only comprehensible in mathematical terms that in the first half of the book the reader may find it difficult to see the forest for the trees. Also relevant and of interest are the snippets of autobiography Smolin provides. Definitely worth a read, but don't be disappointed if, as a non-physicist or non mathematician, you fail to follow all the technicalities.

I never post the plot of a book I read and review, but I can say that this one was awesome in so many ways. Yes there is a second chance at love and characters that stood out from the first chapter and a story-line that connected everything together so fantastically. I highly recommend this book because I had a feel good feeling all the time I was reading it and long after too. I volunteered to read an advance copy of this book, but also purchased it!

When you get a second chance with the one that got away David DeVant won't give up. David is now CEO of his father's billion dollar advertising company but his life feels hollow and he's dreaming of a loving wife and children, especially a daughter. After a year following his father's posing he finally agrees to meet his sister at their childhood home to get it ready to sell. Memories of the girl across the street that used to throw dirt at him makes him smile. Allison Simon is now a divorced single mother and struggling to make ends meet with a douche of an ex. With a chance meeting David is smitten all over with Allison and her now daughter Sierra. The what if's, and could have been's don't stand in the way of the chemistry arching off this meant to be couple. Working through hurdles thrown at them by their past, will this single mom and CEO be able to forge a future together??? A great story that flows flawlessly with real characters. His/her POV, no cheating, no cliffhanger, and a very HEA!.! I love how David and Sierra bond from the first meeting and David Stroud in to help Allison anyway he can. Can't wait for more from Weston Parker. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and purchased a copy for my favorite collection. A must one click!!!

David is any girl's book boyfriend- handsome, rich, smart, an old friend, and totally devoted to Allison, and her adorable little girl. This is a nice fairy tale HEA. The inconsistansies come in with David being a little too laid back about a billion dollar inherited business after having been in the military. He's late all the time and his best friend has to show him the ropes still, a year later. He creates a job for Allison, with no thought put into it. His sister told him that Allison had been divorced while they were cleaning out the homestead, but a chapter later he's asking his sister if she knew whether Allison was divorced. The blurb says that Allison was his little sister's BF, but in the actual story his sister is the oldest sibling, and Allison was the girl she babysat. There's more, but if you can overlook them it is a cute a-h-h-h fairy tale romance. Wish there was a story about their best friends, the sub characters Greyson and Katrina. Greyson sounds like he may be a closet gay- or not- and it would be nice to find out that Katrina wasn't really all smack talk afterall. Oh well. Also, I have an earlier book with a different title but the same cover pic, that I think is the same characters. But there's no reference to that effect. I think Mr. Parker needs a professional assistant that could keep track of all these descrepancies, because he's got great talent in this genre. I enjoyed it.

Allison, a waitress at a local diner, and David, retired Air Force and CEO of the family advertising company, grew up together and made some decisions that impacted their futures. As the story progresses they reconnect, old decisions are revisited while new ones are made, and the lasting repercussions may sabotage any chance they have at a future. Weston Parker's Always Been Mine is a lovely tale about first love s and second chances with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

A hot and sweet romance that I couldn't put down. I've enjoyed all of Weston Parker's books, but this might just be my favorite. Well done. Can't wait for the next one.

They had been neighbors growing up, she had crushed on him, and then he went into the military. Their story, is full of surprises, as they run into each other again years later, the friendship, feelings, laughter, family is still there. Join David and Allison to see where their story takes them❤️. I enjoyed reading it.

I was reading always been mine, and then I realized i have read this book already but under a different name. I was sad to see that that author just put it in a different on it and I paid for the book twice!! The other book it titled Mr. Big Stuff

Hot, sexy, beautiful, funny, twist n turns, loving, family, trust, loyal, memories, hurt, strength.Plus a lot more elements, love the journey this book takes you. You truly feel the characters, the walking down memory lane. Couldnt put it down. Loved it...possible sequel????

Parents of adolescents -- stand by. Adolescence is starting earlier and lasting longer . . . but, according to Dr. Steinberg, that is not such a bad thing, as the adolescent mind is particularly plastic -- uniquely capable of learning and developing -- and emotions and experiences are heightened during adolescences, so the things we experience in adolescence will never quite be as wonderful when we experience them as adults. This book presents an interesting mix of academic treatise / parenting. The author provides extensive data revealing just how immature the adolescent mind can be and discusses social policy vis a vis the United States' treatment of adolescents -- teenagers and drinking, driving, military service, voting, and criminal prosecution. He encourages parents to help delay onset of puberty by ensuring our children eat well, avoid obesity, avoid overexposure to light -- and then protect our children through adolescence through authoritative parenting -- a combination of warmth, firmness, and support.

What a refreshing perspective on adolescence! The advances in neuroscience as explained by Dr Steinberg, have given us a new understanding of how our brains develop, which is fascinating in itself, but the development of the brain during adolescence in particular, explains why it is such a perilous but exciting time in our lives - why it is truly the age of opportunity. As someone on the brink of teen parenting this book was illuminating, invigorating - adolescents are on full throttle and brakes dont work - and liberating: like being handed a compass when you're lost. Highly recommended.

I looked at many books for an Adolescent Psychology course I taught and this was an excellent accessible and affordable choice which my students actually read! Covering both the physical and psychological aspects of adolescent brain development and reorganization I assigned various chapters throughout the semester to complement other materials. Also I would highly recommend this book to anyone parenting, counseling or otherwise interacting with adolescents - rave reviews from two parents to whom I gave copies.

A doctor who works with young adults recommended this book to me and I am grateful to have found it. This is massively helpful when raising adolescents-not to mention understanding teenagers in general. It also helps me understand my own teenage years-I've recommended this to everyone-schools should have teachers read it and pass it out to parents.

Excellent and timely and up-to-date, this book is useful for counselors and psychologists and highly recommended by me for my graduate students. I also encourage professionals who work with adolescents, such as church pastors and teachers and YMCA youth leaders to read this book because it provides important background to the early-onset changes precipitated by puberty. For counselors and psychologists who graduated before the turn of the century and feel like they have been left behind by the 'decade of the brain', this is a very helpful resource. This is especially helpful in the sections that address changes in the onset of puberty and the duration of adolescence. Conversations among parents, educators, mental health professionals, and youth pastors must take this into account. As a psychologist, I strongly believe that we must be proactively defending children as they transition into early adolescence. At the other end of adolescence, we must help people transition into young adulthood with a full understanding of the developing brain's timeline, taking into account the important mail-female differences. The author sets the stage for these discussions with excellent reasoning backed by well organized scientific data.

Essential book on the latest science on adolescent brain plasticity, proving that old notions of personality formation in early childhood are terribly wrong. Every parent, guardian or professional working with adolescents (ages 10-25) should read this book. This is the age of opportunity and the age of potential disaster for lifelong personality and psychology. The author has some hard-won and important prescriptions from parenting to public policy on how to approach adolescent development for better future adults and a better future society.

Parents with adolescence need to read this and everyone who works with this age group. We do look at this age group as hard to deal with and parent are trying to survive this stage of development. Laurence Steinberg shines a light on this stage of development to reframe all that we know and what we think we know....we have been missing out on a opportunity of great importance to children who are going through this stage and the possibilities that could be if we would just gain some understanding. Great information, much needed and necessary for the next generation and generations to come!

Steinberg's work is always impressively authoritative and this book is no exception. It's rich with research and references, dense enough for academics and written clearly enough for the lay public to get a lot out of it too.

I wish I'd had this book when I was entering middle school... or high school, or college, or my 20s and 30s. There are a lot of valuable life lessons crammed into this little volume, and you can call me a slow learner, but I didn't figure most of this stuff out until I was well into adulthood. Even though it's filled with excellent advice, it's also got humor, relatable anecdotes, and interesting exercises, so it doesn't come off as dry or preachy. I bought the Kindle version to read for myself, then a paperback for my kids, and finally a hardcover to donate to their school. This book should be required reading for tweens everywhere (and their teachers and parents!), and it would make an excellent gift, too!

My son needed to read a non-fiction book over the summer, so I happened to stumble upon this book. He just entered middle school and really enjoyed this book. The book made him laugh and helped to make him feel comfortable on the first day of middle school.

With interesting ideas on thinking about this and drawings to go along with them plus steps on having the best middle school life, this book is is AMAZING!! It has great humor and wonderful ways of looking at things, so its perfect for me, a person who likes humorous books and interesting ideas. I loved this book! Beginning to end this book had me hooked, plus it wasn't very long at all. Pretty quick read, actually! A must read for anyone. Perfect, absolutely perfect.

My daughter loved this book. She read it when she entered Middle School.

My youngest son just started middle school. He loves this book

My son enjoyed this book.

My 12 year old daughter didn't care for the book.
