Penzler Pick, November 2001: Pulp magazines reigned for about a quarter of a century as the most popular entertainment medium in America. They were cheaply produced and, during the Great Depression, were blessedly cheap to buy, generally a dime. And they were plentiful. After a low-key beginning, when a few magazines displayed their tasteful covers to an appreciative readership, their success spawned countless competitors. The covers became more and more garish, and promised ever greater excitement. Western covers went from an illustration of an Indian gently paddling his canoe to furious cattle stampedes, a huge gang of obviously ferocious savages attacking a defenseless family, and depictions of shootouts in every conceivable locale. Mystery covers went from showing a cop on the beat to villainous thugs tearing the clothes off a helpless young woman (most frequently a generously endowed young blonde) or any other sort of action that promised the reader endless excitement. And they delivered. Pulp writers knew how to write thrilling stories and books. Many of the best went on to extremely successful careers in book form. Dashiell Hammett wrote most of his stories and novels for the pulps, and he is now recognized as one of the most influential fiction writers of the 20th century. Raymond Chandler, too, wrote stories for the pulps and is frequently conceded to be the great mystery writer of the 20th century. Pulps became more and more specialized as their numbers increased, soon appealing to fans of jungle stories, science fiction, fantasy, railroad stories, romances, Westerns, Western romances, aviation, the Foreign Legion, engineering, the outdoors, courtrooms, Wall Street, newspapers, firefighters, and so on. Now there is a new book that recalls that Golden Age of the pulp magazines (roughly 1920-1945) with a knowledgeable and nicely written text that covers all the highlights of the major magazines and the major writers, who are sometimes remembered today and, alas, sometimes not. A gloriously beautiful book, Frank M. Robinson demonstrates that the pulp era was as much one of great art as it was of purple prose. In addition to a fine general history of the pulps and their now vanished market, Robinson reproduces a astounding number of original covers in full color. More than a simple coffee table book, this tome is worth repeated perusals.With original pulps rapidly rising in costs, the images in this book make nice stand-ins. What the reader really comes away with is a desire for original art from these cover, framed and upon their own walls If I ever win the lottery ...

Good book, was very informative about the history of pulps. The book size is a large coffee table sized book. The art work is great, which is really why I bought this book. Page after page of beautiful pulp cover artwork is represented from the 30s to the 50s, all printed on great quality paper. I also wanted a book which would represent the various genres of pulp covers, from adventure covers to science fiction to sexy damsels and risque covers, and this book delivered. Be warned, though, that the cover shown of 'The Shadow' is not the front cover of the book. The book I got actually has the cover from "Breezy Stories" March 1937 issue, which shows a sexy damsel in a yellow dress. That's the reason it got 4 instead of 5 stars. Still, if you want a definitive book on the history of pulp magazines, look no further my friend!

This is a fully revised edition of the first pictorial history of the pulp magazines to be published and the authors finally got it right. There is a complete index of magazine titles and the artists who painted their covers, the images have been rescanned to eliminate any "moire" patterns that may have degraded the paintings, and the most unusual cover ever published has now been included (a painting by John Held Jr., famous for his "sheiks and shebas" of the Jazz Age). The cover has been redesigned and features the image of a pirate far more fearsome than Johnny Depp. This is the book that started it all and the price is now more than right. --Frank M. Robinson (I'm one of the authors).

This large art book features the covers of hundreds of pulp magazines, along with (often amusing) commentary and history. Unlike other books I've seen, this one strives to cover the entire range of genres, subgenres, and specialized subjects, so that along with more familiar genres such as SF, horror, adventure, romance (love story and romance pulps had the highest circulation of any genre, we are told, but are the least likely to survive), detective, western, war, hero (the Shadow knows!), etc., we see examples of Wall Street Stories (who knew 1929 would be a bad time to sell stories of high finance?) to the infamous Zeppelin Stories (hey, Railroad Man's Stories was one of the most popular, so why not?), not to mention strange hybrids like the popular Ranchland Romances and its several competitors. I can more than recommend to this my fellow SF/fantasy/horror genre fans, but not just to them, to fans of any of these genres or just popular culture.

I have never picked up a book series and have been so amazed by words on paper. Robert Muchamore has a serious skill for making you feel as if you are standing right in the middle of these stories.I originally borrowed the book serious from my cousin but they were just so good I had to buy my own set as I couldn't stop reading them.The Fall is another Robert Muchamore book that you will plough through without even realising how much you have read and at that stage you will realise your done.Stop reading this review and go buy it!!!!

Fun reads, good story if a little predictable.

Yes the book was good but I like it better when James is on mission s with some one else

Not our favorite Cherub book, but it is a fun read. For smaller children and a read-aloud, you can do some on-the-fly editing. These books always spark interesting family discussion.

Good and always a page turner as the rest of the books in the series. You just can't help finance finishing it in 3 ½ hours.

I love the series! He words it so well I could put myself in the book. I love the action and comedy to.

my children love the Cherub series. Highly recommend them for both girls and boys. depending on the child- these books could be read by anyone 4th grade on up to 8th.

My son is currently reading this series. He is really enjoying it. He does not enjoy reading much, so it must be appealing to 8th grade boys.

I finished reading this excellent book just this morning and felt compelled to share my thoughts on it. The book is truly excellent and important. I'd even call it ground breaking, as the excellent approach advocated herein by Larry Burns not only enables data developers to overcome the terrifying concept of "object relational impedance" but also enables us to exploit fully the original sage teachings of Dr. Codd, whose Relational Model for Database Management revolutionized Enterprise Data Management, even though it is even today little undertood. So, the book is very much more than just a primer on how to build the Agile Database. Rather, I'd credit the book with being an excellent overall and truly innovative approach to data modeling, management, and database design in a modern Information Technology environment.Data Modeling Rock Star Steve Hoberman introduced me to this work by Larry Burns when Steve was at our offices earlier this month delivering his excellent Master Data Modeling Class. In one of his modules on the use of Views, Steve mentioned this ground breaking work by Larry Burns. I got terribly excited, as the way Steve desribed Larry's approach was right in synch with thoughts that had been floating around in my mind for a long while relative to the effective exploitation of relational database technology(OK. I don't get out out much - - :-)) In any case, Larry's approach is truly brilliant. We can model our databases properly, in a normalized sense, from the start. Then we can exploit modern relational database technology through the intelligent usage of Views, Stored Procedures, Triggers, and Functions in order to facilitate alternative represenations of the data, security options, access patterns, and such. By so doing, we can be faithful to Dr. Codd's original concept of the three schema architecture for database and make our business users and application development colleagues happy at the same time. This is really great stuff. I strongly recommend Larry's excellent book to all interested practictioners.

The fundamental stored procedure and database view approach seems particularly important when one starts thinking about moving systems from standalone databases to "cloud" participation. His points seem to improve on Ambler who seemed to be the lone voice in the wilderness arguing for using RDBMS features invented after the 1980's.

The subtitle says it all -- How to build a successful application using agile without sacrificing data management". Larry Burns explains how to combine agile and databases based on his own first hand experience.In particular Chapter 9 is superb. Burns discusses techniques for encapsulating and abstracting physical database details so that a database is more amenable for application programming. The discussion in this chapter is the best that I've seen in any book. This chapter alone justifies the book.

You can tell this book is written by someone from the trenches of the agile/data management war. The key takeaway for me is that there are principles and practices to use to make sure the business benefits from software development projects. We need to change our mindset when there are agile developers who just want to code and not document including doing some initial design up front. Also we need to change if there are data professionals who are adamant on completing the detailed design before coding. Somewhere in the middle there is a balance which maximizes business benefit. There is a lot of intellectual property given away in this book in the form of analogies, principles, and advice. For example, the author's concept of a virtual data layer has immediate applicability in my current assignment.

Really like this book. I like the way that is it written. I found it easy to follow and informative.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."   Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

I loved this story as a kid, so I was excited to see that there was a board book version of it available so my little ones wouldn't accidentally destroy it. The story itself is fun, and our preschool-aged kids especially love it.My only beef with the board book version: it's missing at least one of the pages that the original story has. Is it crucial to the plot? No, but don't expect it to be exactly the same as the regular book. Still not a deal breaker though. I would buy it again even knowing that the page isn't there.

I was looking for a book that was similar to The Foot Book because my daughter loves that one (and we are getting a little bored with reading it every night) and she loves hats. This book has some silly rhymes and pictures but is mostly adjectives. It's not as interesting as The Foot Book since it just rattles off rhyming adjectives as the bear looks for a new hat as opposed to showing new situations. It's a decent book but not a go-to book for her.

This is not a storybook, but an early reading book. It has a story to it, but reads in short simple phrases describing the different hats. Like most of these Bright and Early Board books, it is taken from an old Bright and Early book and the the original story is a bit condensed, but this one doesn't lose much. The pace is sped up a little, which is not all that bad. Just don't be surprised if you're a book purist who enjoyed the original. I enjoy both versions now, and my little girls (aged 1-3), who don't know the difference, love the easy to remember words and rhyming flow of this super simple story. The older two have it memorized and love to "read" it back to me!

I didn't realize the book would be so small in size, but my 2 year old granddaughter loves the story, and it's easy enough that she'll "read it" herself flipping through the pages. Very cute and also sturdy, thick cardboard pages! I was really excited to find this book, as it's the same book I read to my daughter when she was 2.

I bought this for my one year old for his first birthday because it was a favorite of his Dad's growing up. He wasn't too interested in books quite yet but once he got this book, he started carrying it around and bringing it to me to read. I probably read this book to him five times a day. His older sister (3) can read it to him too since she has all the words memorized. The illustrations are fun and the words are rhyming and have a great rhythm. It's such a quick read too that I don't mind reading it to him five times a day either! There's a reason this book is still in print and that's because it's so fun for little kids!

I've read this book aloud to my child countless times, and it never seems to grow old. Great story that children will appreciate even as they get older - sometimes your beloved possessions are better than the new fad that is trying to replace them, even though the trendy things may hold a temporary allure. Great Berenstain illustrations are nostalgic for the adults reading these for their kids. Even with all the wonderful books out for kids today, the Berenstain Bears remain a timeless classic.

The 1st book our daughter learned to read, right after her 3rd birthday! A very fun book, great rhyming and beautiful illustrations that live up to the story.

This is a great book! I've read it to three generations now and each of them loved it....and so did I! They all motioned as if they were trying on hats, would make 'bad' faces and many of them, and even memorized some of the pages when they were very young! I was certainly surprised when they first 'read' some pages with me. To this day, every time someone says, "Just right!" we'll say "Just right, just right, just right! After all these years I still enjoy this book!

My review of The Frog on the Wall by Jamie Terra Hawk. I begin my review with an admission that I know and admire Jamie a great deal. I met her earlier this year as we participated in the 2018 Women’s March in Rockford, Illinois. We met for the first time in the parking lot of the Church where she has been a long-time member. I learned some of her story during our walk to the starting point of the march and was left wanting to learn more. Her autobiography grabbed me at the first page and didn’t release me until I finished it. What a journey she has traveled! I submit that a great many people, when confronted with extremely difficult situations like those she encountered, would not have survived to share them. The “frog on the wall” metaphor is a perfect one, I think, and I encourage you to read this book if you are open to learning about some of the challenges that people encounter when they find themselves trapped in the “wrong” body.

This book is both poignant and difficult, a story about two people who care for each other so deeply that one gives himself up for the other. It’s also a story of redemption and transformation, but a transformation that is really a restoration. Perhaps what is most remarkable about Jamie’s story is its hopefulness amidst so much hurt and pain. Thank you for this book, Jamie.

She simply needed her outward appearance to reflect that, and more difficult than that, others to accept it 😬.I can attest-She never changed from the person we all had always known: loving,patient, informative, supportive, funny, compassionate ......but hopefully after reading this book (or considering reading it), more changed about your willingness to follow who she has always been: an activist, and advocate. A father. A girlfriend. A wife. And how does that all fit together??? If you ask me? Perfectly. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Jamie Terra Hawk is a truly gifted writer. Her extraordinary story and courageous spirit demand attention throughout the entire book. Expect to be inspired! A must read!

A must read for anyone in the LGBT community, or who has a family member that is LGBT and who would like to understand what it is really like. I could not put the book down, even though I knew the outcome. Although some friends did not understand the analogy of the frog on the wall, it is explained in a later chapter. The book gave me a greater insight, and acceptance, to people who are not the same as myself.
