Michael Glover's "The Peninsular War 1807-1814" is a concise and very readable history of the British intervention in that conflict. Glover follows Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, and his legendarily tough Anglo-Portuguese Army through the key events of a long war involving Spain, Portugal and Britain on one side and Napoleon's Imperial France on the other.Glover does his due diligence in describing the start of the war, with the French occupation of Spain and invasion of Portugal, and includes Sir John Moore's ill-fated expedition into Spain in 1808. The Spanish army and its guerrillas make short periodic appearances. The narrative picks up steam with the return of Wellesley to the Peninsula, his defeat of the second French invasion of Portugal, and the long struggle to wear down the French armies in Spain.Glover does a nice job delivering balanced coverage of the tactical and operational aspects of the British intervention, well-seeded with appropriate quotations from key participants. In particular, he addresses the still relevant interplay between Wellesley as a deployed expeditionary commander facing superior numbers and his civilian masters in London underwriting an expensive campaign and risking most of Britain's deployable Army units. This history was first published in 1974; more recent accounts are available for the serious student. Recommended to the general reader as an accessible account of the Peninsular War.

Michael Glover's "The Peninsular War 1807-1814" was first published in 1974; this Penguin paperback edition is dated 2001. Experienced military historian Michael Glover promises, and delivers, a highly readable and concise military history. His narrative frequently but not exclusively follows Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, and his Anglo-Portuguese Army, who were present at many of the key events of a long, multi-sided war involving France, Spain, Portugal, and Great Britain. The conflict in Spain was an offshoot of the French Emporeor Napoleon's efforts to dominate continental Europe. Glover begins his story with the march of Imperial French forces through Spain to Portugal and their subsequent seizure of both kingdoms. The British Government sent its small "disposable" force under Sir Arthur Wellesley to Portugal. Wellesley succeeded in defeating the local French Army before being displaced from command, and in fact would return to Portugal the following year to take up the task of driving out the French. He and his army would ultimately do so, with the more or less enthusiastic support of the Portuguese and Spanish.Glover's narrative is a nicely balanced mixture of the tactical and the operational levels of war, well-seeded with appropriate quotes from participants. He addresses the still relevant interplay of conventional, naval and guerilla forces in a difficult fighting environment, while stressing the importance of logistics and civil-military relations to the outcome. Glover provides explanations, where necessary, of events beyond the Iberian Peninsula. There is a nice selection of sketch maps and pictures included. The scholarship is perhaps dated but still perfectly adequate for the general reader and for the dedicated student of the conflict. "The Peninsular War" is therefore very highly recommended, even in used form.

This book was a great account of the Peninsular War, well at least the part involving the British army. The book is detailed in military movements and how the British were able to push the French out. The downside was that there was very little involving the Spainish and Portugese armies. For instance, Wellington's victories at Talavara and Badajoz recieved the attention they deserved, but Balien was sort of passed over as a skirmish. In addition major French victories such as Saragossa, Medellin and Ocana are barely mentioned at all. It almost makes it seem as if the British are doing all the fighting which is of course false. This book should more likely be called "The British in the Peninsular War: A Concise History." So if you want to know about the British involvement, this is a great book. If you want to know about the Spanish involvement I would look elseware such as David Gates' book "The Spanish Ulcer."

Glover does a good job. However, he suffers from an Anglo-centric and Wellington-centric view of the war. For a more thorough history, read Oman. To Glover's credit there is some information here that Oman leaves out.

Excellent. This does not normally provide the detail in the foxhole, even though it does provide that detail occasionally, and often in stories I have not heard before. What this does provide is priceless. The Central drive has reams available that tell us what was "really" happening, the intrigues and issues. This book is the first I've seen that goes in-depth into the New Guinea campaign. I now understand the politics behind Roosevelt's decision to bring MacArthur back, him being an important pawn in a scheme to appease Curtain and Churchill both of which had real conflicting needs. It helped me see what was going on at that time, rather than continue with the current armchair nasty view of MacArthur. He was an egotist and self-focused to be sure, but he was neither a coward nor a fool. The man was forced into a convenient position by brilliant/diabolical political maneuver, and did a pretty good job. Those abandoned, would never be able to see this because of the horrors they faced, for which MacArthur was the near-term scapegoat, yet the real issue was that the US turned it's back on them because it failed to prepare. The logic of why it came down the way it did when the bombs fell, is uncomfortably valid, the damage already done years prior in not spending funds to meet obligations. A black mark on our history, but not actually MacArthur's. This book made me start to realize this. I thought he was just a jerk prior to this. There were other things that were new to me. For example, the meeting between Nimitz, Roosevelt and MacArthur has had no depth to me prior to this book. I feel like I know now what that meeting was a about and even the emotional / political details about it, normally lost with most historical accounts having one or two sentences. Fascinating stuff. The book is fresh, and I highly recommend it. Read with the Army and Marine accounts of battles, that dive into the rich minutia, one gets a complete picture.

I can remember two WWII-related state funerals as a youth in the 60’s: MacArthur’s and Churchill’s. Now, fifty years later and with time on my hands, those recollections fueled an effort to personally re-establish how these men rose to such vaulted status in the eyes of the world. Publication of Duffy’s book coincided with my reading project, and became the first one I purchased after discovering on the internet that I was sadly ignorant of the entire New Guinea campaign. I found the book well crafted and highly engaging; balancing factual back-story elements with frightful details of the ensuing battles. MacArthur’s personal drive, absolute confidence in his own skills, and ability to inspire others beyond their limitations are clearly demonstrated, as he forces the Japanese from island to island across the archipelago. Duffy aptly describes an outstanding Leader and military commander who stands in stark contrast to the US leadership of today. It’s a great read.

Excellent work on the New Guinea campaign. Author James Duffy gives the reader an excellent history, well told, encompassing the ground, air and naval war in 1942-1943.The author begins with the taking of Rabaul on New Britain by the Japanese, creating an outpost for Japanese air, ground and naval forces. The author moves on to Gen. Douglas MacArthur being ordered to leave the Philippines and go to Australia. From there, MacArthurwould plan and lead the Allies comeback in the Southwest Pacific theater.James Duffy does an excellent job of chronicling the campaign from beginning to end. Quite rightly, he highlights the contribution of the Australians, especially in the beginning, that were the main ground assets available to MacArthur. The tough "Aussies" were both unblooded soldiers and two divisions of veterans of North Africa who had already seen combat and were experienced. Duffy gives the reader a good idea of the physical environment of the island with it's hot, humid, malarial jungles and high, rugged mountains. The reader will quickly realize that the Southwest Pacific had a very low priority for reinforcement and equipment. In the beginning, an invasion force may consist of several destroyers with a number of destroyer transports, tugs, trawlers, steamers, etc. It is apparent to the reader that the US Navy wanted to do as little as possible to assist MacArthur preferring instead to fight their own war against the Imperial Japanese Navy.MacArthur and his command had to do more with less. When one reads about the comparison of casualties between MacArthur's operations and the bloodbaths like Tarawa in the Central Pacific, much of it is a result of the paucity of resources at SWPA's command. MacArthur simply couldn't waste resources - including human resources - because he had so little to work with. This is especially true in the beginning of the campaign. The author uses a lot of first-hand accounts in his narrative and that's something I enjoy reading - the words of the people who were there at the time and participated in these battles. There's also a lot from the Japanese point of view and the reader gets a sense of the often rash and foolish attitude of Japanese commanders who always seemed to prefer the most direct (and obvious) course of action. Japanese strategists send units without being able to supply them and the number of Japanese soldiers who simply starved to death is appalling.Without a doubt, this is a very good account of the New Guinea campaign and I recommend it to those interested with five stars. It was a good read!

‘“How did you find your way back?’ His words were weak, a whisper. ‘I woke up one day and had lost everything. My life had no value. I had no value. And then this wonderful man showed me that I was priceless, a child of the King, and loved. So, when I feel lost or afraid—which I still do, sometimes—I cling to my new identity now. I refuse to believe the lie.” Chad stared into the sky, his shirt damp, rain clinging to his cheeks. ‘I feel worthless. All the time.”’We all have those times that we feel like a failure. This is so much worse. Chad Richardson has not only destroyed his life by choosing substances over everything but, he has trampled upon everyone, most of all his wife Laila. After a string nasty relapses, Chad leaves town leaving chaos in his wake. He has a secret that makes running seem like the only option. He finds the willpower to get clean and wants to have a triumphant return after he receives his one year sobriety chip but, a call in the middle of the night leaves him questioning his plan. What he wants more than anything is to win back the heart and trust of his now ex-wife (due to a non-contested divorce) but, he may already be too late.Laila Richardson wants desperately to just move on. Move on from the wreckage that was her marriage to her high school sweetheart Chad, move out of the town she was born and raised in, and finally move on with a new man. Why can’t she have the fairytale ending? She has the man and the plan, even the cute little cottage. She thinks she is right on track when, a bombshell shows back up on her front porch after years without so much as a word.I won’t spoil the book for you but, man this is an awesome book! Picking up a few months after “My Hope Next Door” left off, you see Laila in the best place she has been in a long time. She is on the road to mending a broken relationship with her childhood best friend, Katie (the main character from My Hope Next Door). Through this relationship she is seeing that she can’t change Chad. Chad must make the decision to change himself. This takes a huge weight off her shoulders. However, it still doesn’t fill the hole in her heart.Chad’s life has drastically changed in the last nine months. He has gotten sober, got a job, kept the job, and started building a life outside of the drug world. Chad is a living testament to all the struggles of those faced with a life of addiction. However, his struggles are only just beginning when he stands face-to-face with Laila on what was once “their” front porch.“My Unexpected Hope” is so much more than a love story. Tammy L. Gray weaves a life-like epic that will have you riding a full range roller-coaster of emotions throughout. In my opinion, she is a master of writing characters who could be your neighbor or someone else you know. Trust is so easy to lose but, so hard to win back. We all can relate to a situation where trust has either been won or lost. Can Chad regain the trust of Laila and ultimately rebuild the marriage he let fall apart? Can Laila see past years of hurt and broken promises from the one who vowed to cherish her above all else? Read “My Unexpected Hope” by Tammy L. Gray to find out.**Note: I did receive an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Four and a half stars for Laila and Chad's story in My Unexpected Hope. It's been several months since I read Katie and Asher's story in My Hope Next Door, so a few chapters into MUH I went back and skimmed thru the MYND to refamiliarize myself with all these characters, since their lives are so intertwined. Ms. Gray portrays, so heartbreakingly well, the stark life of an addict and those who love them, and are loved by them. Laila kicked Chad out, changed the locks, and divorced him over a year ago, after he broke promise after promise about his addiction to booze and drugs. Chad flees to Atlanta, several hours away, because he's in debt to the local dealer and everyone knows what happens to those who don't pay up! Even though cutting ties with Chad was a desperate life saving move, Laila is still so fragile inside, and is almost ready to move to the neighboring town to make a fresh start with Ben, the kind, quiet, solid Christian man she met at church in the new town. He doesn't know everything about her past with Chad, and she's trying to keep her two lives separate. But, as things go, Laila's two worlds collide when Ben shows up at her job and someone contacts Chad and he returns -- sober and trying to stay under the radar of Slim, the drug dealer, but desperate to win Laila back. There is so much pain in these lives that you long for a safe place for each of them to find peace, and hope. Ms. Gray does a good job of maneuvering us through all the minefields that could lead to happiness. Her characters are maturely fleshed out and the story is well developed. I stop just short of 5 stars due to some last minute plot machinations that strain the bands of believability. This story will wring you out like your grandma's old time washing machine, but in a real good way! Hope there is another book coming for this series! Would love to hear what happens to Cooper, who we first met and seemed all but unredeemable in MHND, but was a good friend to Chad in MUH.

Absolutely wonderful! A great story about second chances. It's a wonderful look at how a willingness to forgive can help move a life or lives forward. Wonderful character development. It wasn't a case of a quick fix. You felt the genuine hurt of the heroine. You felt the sorrow of the hero for the obvious pain he had caused. He characters had to grow and work through real emotions and hurts and real life to get to a place of common ground. You can relate to the characters and the story is believable. No sex. Genuine relationships being built on changing hearts and overcoming past hurts and mutual respect for one another.Thank you to this author for showing that reconciliation can be a possibility when all of the elements are there.

Great book that pulls you into the story of this couple-their struggles, their fears, their hurts, their anguish as well as their victories, their hopes, their healing, and their redemption. You feel every ounce of Chad's remorse and his battles with temptation. Ms. Gray doesn't gloss over his struggles or the weight of decisions made, but she offers hope in the midst of it all. Laila thinks she's ready to move on, but she's not truly ready to let the new guy in, to let her life with him intersect with who she is, where she's from. In her attempt to move on, she’s really just running from her past. On their own, in their broken states, Chad and Laila can't make "them" work. They can't be what the other needs them to be. This book is the journey of them learning how to be with each other in a new way, a healthy way, a better way. At the end, you'll feel the relief of a real, new, fresh, clean start with them.Tammy L. Gray never fails to blow me away in how she deals with some of the most tragic circumstances of life while clearly showing the power of God to overcome, heal, and redeem. She never glosses over or minimizes the situations which only show God's mightiness to redeem any brokenness we face.
