Reviewing a Michelin Green Guide is not easy; it's like reviewing the latest Faberge easter egg for the Tsar. All the previous ones were great; this one is great; what is there to say? I haven't used every Green Guide, but I have used a bunch, both in the US and in Europe. They don't replace a general guide book such as Fodor's, Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, and the like. But for culture and history, they simply can't be beat. And for the volumes with walking tours, you'll see everything worth seeing on those tours. We recently spent a week in Chicago, and we relied entirely on this book. It does not have exhaustive lists of restaurants or hotels, but everything it suggests is carefully selected. Follow as many of their key recommendations as possible, and your time in Chicago will be well spent. Unless, of course, you want to hit the hottest sports bars and skate board parks: look elsewhere for those.

I have purchased several guides to Paris prior to my trip. They all were quite good, but in the end this was the only one I took with me, and I was pleased with my decision. My hotels were reserved well ahead of time and I was aware of various practicalities, e.g., how to use Metro and RER, where to buy groceries, etc. What I needed was a guide to various sites and a set of walking tours with maps. And this Michelin guide was perfect for that. The quality of the binding, paper, print, and maps is very high making reading the guide more pleasurable than some other guides I have.I would definitely use it on future trips to Paris, and will be buying updated editions depending on how soon that will be.

Customer reviews of older editions of this guide are very complimentary -- and deservedly so! But sadly, the newer green guides are much less useful than their predecessors and this 2011 green guide is a good example of the newer editions.I have been using Michelin green and red guides with great pleasure since 1961 for our annual vacations in Europe. I just counted the green guides we own -- 40, some of them dating back to the 1960s and 1970s if we haven't returned to an area since then. But the newest green guides are a disaster. They are full of color photos and hotel and restaurant recommendations -- but much of the detailed descriptions of the sights has disappeared. And some of the town maps and the sights themselves have also disappeared from this guide, including some sights that were rated one star in the previous edition.Another problem -- this guide is now organized by area, instead of alphabetically by town, so I can no longer quickly turn to the location in which I'm interested but have to use the index to find its page number.I bought the new (2011) edition of the Germany green guide because it has up-to-date information about opening times, entrance fees, etc. Fortunately, I still have my 2005 Germany green guide and will take it along on our trip to Germany to have the detailed descriptions and town maps. And I will no longer discard the older green guide when I buy a new edition!

The Green Guide is the basecamp for Paris travel books. The book's limitation, in Kindle form, anyway, is that it is not so easily searchable. The index does not suffice. A Kindle word search discloses references to an address equally with references to the thing I'm looking for. Hence, searching in Kindle app takes more effort than it should.Obviously, walking 'round Paris, it's easier to carry the Kindle version than the physical book, so that makes a trade-off.

This guide is loaded with information, organized by arrondissement, which is great, as many competing volumes which use a short hand nomenclature when describing areas of Paris. If you are a wanderer...or a "flaneur" as the Parisians might say, this is a good guide. If you need more direction see Mr. Steves' works. Those will transport you quite well through very structured "tours, walks" etc.

Like so many of the Michelin green guides, this is an indispensable companion when you visit Paris. Even though I had been there several times before, it opened my eyes to a lot of neighborhoods and sites that I had not previously seen. Also highly recommend Seven Ages of Paris by Alistair Horne -- you will never see the Louvre the same again!

Just as all other Michelin maps are, this one is no exception - very clear, easy to read, good use of color and has all the info I want when I need a reference for my location and planned routes, destinations, etc. Having GPS and NAV-Tech gear in your car is great, but I always have a REAL map by my side just in case that gear sends me on the wrong route or takes me to non-existent roads or on "short-cuts" that are really private roads, not for public use. Have heard too many horror stories from others about that kind of trip. Having the best real map assures me I'll never be lost. Then there are those times when you ask for NAV -Tech gear in your rental car and the agency has none....then what're you going to do?

The best , most detailed guide for visitors to Brittany. It has information on all aspects of Beittany with maps, ratings on sites, and great descriptions of town, churches, beaches, etc. I would not visit France without a green guide for the region.

#24,100 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Wow, what a great book! I am a technical professional enrolled in a graduate business degree program, and until now the plethora of financial and accounting terminology and rules has been bewildering for me. That is no longer true after buying this book. I have primarily used it as a reference book, and without fail any explanation I have needed has been easy to find, clear and concise.I am no longer in the financially confused majority, largely thanks to this book. The author's education is in biochemistry (as is my undergraduate education), and because he originally came from the hard sciences where clarity and accuracy are valued above all else he was better able to be clear and easy to understand in comparison to many business school authors who seem to thrive on jargon and platitudes. This is a great book to have on the reference shelf. If you are involved with business finance or investment analysis it is simply the best book available on the subject and should be considered indispensable!

I enjoyed reading this book (as much as one could enjoy a book on numbers that is!). I wanted to brush up on my accounting so I could better read financial statements for public companies I invest in. I took accounting a long time ago in college so knew the basics but even that was a little rough around the edges for me.This book lays out clearly the 3 main financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow) and provides a sample company so you can follow along how each works and is related to the others. It is well written and the examples nicely formatted so you can follow along.I would recommend this book to anyone that knows nothing about financial statements or somebody like me who just needs to brush up again on the basics and a bit beyond them too.

This is a really good book for review. I am going back into a business degree and Its been several years since I have had accounting. This book acted as a great refresher and it is laid out in a very logical manner. I would say that you might wanted to consider the printed version vs the kindle version. Because of the layout of the book and the type of subject matter, it does not lend itself to be easy to read on the kindle.

A solid foundation is critical to understanding concepts. So you'd think most books would spend a lot of time ensuring and clarifying the basics, right? Wrong! Simply not true! Most of the accounting/finance books just don't get into clarifying the very basics - the confusing array of terms used, how they fit together, what they actually mean in a real world setting, etc. This book - a must on every manager’s shelf - adds value by providing clear and concise definitions and relates them visually. The chapter on connections ties a lot of information together with such ease. Above all the step by step examples go a long long way into clarifying any remaining confusion you'd have. It is very easy to read. You'd probably finish it over a weekend. So it is tremendous bang for buck.Clearly the first introductory book one should read. There are plenty of good books for the next level (IMHO).**_Simply go get it - read it. Enjoy the clarity in your decision making. Highly recommended._**Here is a list of books that might also help.Introductory level:1. Financial statements (Thomas Ittelson, this book)2. How to use financial statements: A guide to understanding the numbers (James Bandler)3. How to read a financial report: wringing vital signs out of numbers (John A. Tracy)Next Level:4. Financial Statement Analysis: the investors self study to interpretting & analyzing financial statements, revised edition (Charles J. Woelfel)5. Analysis For Financial Management (Robert C. Higgins) - This is one excellent book.6. Techniques Of Financial Analysis: A Modern Approach (Eric A. Helfert)7. Finance & Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers (Steven A. Finkler)MBA Level:7. The Analysis And Use Of Financial Statements (Gerald White, Sondhi, et. al) - dense reading (plus the plain format of this version of the book is sure to make you fall asleep. Hats off to you if you can read this book cover to cover. :).)8. Also Corporate Finance: theory and practice (Damodaran) has a very good advanced level introductory chapter. Pick it up at a library and ...If you had to buy 1 book:I'd recommend - #1 above. If you could buy 2 books (over time):I'd recommend - #1 and #5 above. If you could buy 3 books (for an in depth managerial understanding):I'd recommend - #1, #5 and #6 above.#7 - has a decent cd of spreadsheets for ready use (proforma cash flows, ledgers, etc; very handy)Good luck!************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************It has been 9 years since I first wrote this review and I felt like it was time I updated it. While, I continue to be interested in this topic (and my quest to find simple, educational and illustrative books is always ongoing), there are a few noteworthy books that I intend to add to this essentially solid list of “accounting/finance absolutely elementary” books. So here it is. And importantly thank you for your feedback and comments. Many of you have written asking me to update this list. I welcome and appreciate your feedback. My position and recommendation is essentially the same (after all these years). **__This book continues to be the __very best__ introductory book on this topic__**. No two ways about it – **_Simply go get it - read it. Enjoy the clarity in your decision making. Highly recommended._**Introductory level:1. Financial statements (Thomas Ittelson, this book)2. How to use financial statements: a guide to understanding the numbers (James Bandler)3. How to read a financial report: wringing vital signs out of numbers (John A. Tracy and Tage Tracy)4. Bookkeepers boot camp: get a grip on accounting basics (Angie Mohr) Infact, Angie Mohr has written an excellent series of 3 books which I will compare and rate below: - Bookkeepers boot camp: get a grip on accounting basics (Angie Mohr) - Finance & grow your new business: get a grip on the money (Angie Mohr) - Financial management 101: get a grip on your business numbers (Angie Mohr)Next Level:5. Managing by the numbers: a commonsense guide to understanding and using your company’s financials (Chuck Kremer and Ron Rizzuto with John Case) Part 2 of this book - "Understanding the big picture" is especially excellent. A financial scorecard tool (pg 68 & 69) is just fantastic and describes how linkages between the statements really work. Its worth buying this book just for this section, IMHO.6. Financial intelligence, revised edition: a managers guide to knowing what the numbers really mean (Karen Berman and Joe Knight)7. Accounting for the numberphobic: a survival guide for small business owners (Dawn Fotopulos)8. Financial statement analysis: the investors self-study to interpreting & analyzing financial statements, revised edition (Charles J. Woelfel)9. Analysis for financial management (Robert C. Finkler)MBA Level:12. Principles of finance with excel (Simon Benninga) – Another excellent and practical book (help you translate your learnings into excel)- BTW, Simon Benninga has written a super awesome MBA level textbook in “Financial Modelling”13. Corporate finance: theory and practice (Damodaran)- Corporate finance is a dated but good verbose detailed text book. It has a very good advanced level introductory chapter on financial statements. Pick it up at a library and ...** If you had to buy 1 book: I'd recommend - #1 above.** If you could buy 2 books (over time): I'd recommend - #1 and #4 above. (my recommendation has changed)** If you could buy 3 books (for an in depth managerial understanding): I'd recommend - #1, #4 and #5 above. (my recommendation has changed)** If you want a solid grasp (i.e. mastery) of this topic: I'd recommend - #1, #4, #5, #9 and #12. (i agree, it’s a few books)** If you are a startup or a small business and want a managerial understanding: I’d recommend - #1, #4 (the entire set of 3 books), and #5 above. (and you can have meaningful conversations with your accountant)Best and Good Luck!

This is the first time I have ever commented on a product sold on Amazon. First, the book arrived ahead of time. Secondly, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who does not know anything about accounting. I am considering starting a business and have been educating myself on various topics. Although, I have a science/math background, I have never taken an accounting course. This book is very easy to read and understand. It breaks down common accounting terminology for you. After reading this book, I feel confident in knowing how business transactions affect financial statements. It is an interesting read as you learn about the develop of an applesauce company. If you want to develop a general knowledge base of accounting, then this is the book for you. If you are looking for a technical book that will expand your current accounting knowledge, then it might be a waste of money.

This book is seriously so good. I've been in the accounting world for 10 years, I have my Accounting degree, and I am a Controller for a small regional company. I'm 13 pages into this book and I've thought several times already that this should be required reading in any entry-level accounting class in college. I bought this book because while I understand this stuff, I often feel like I missed some important, basic things during school and that missing those things has made the quite simple accounting world seem more difficult than it actually is. The way this author presents the information and explains definitions and methods makes me HAPPY. Thank you Mr. Ittelson!!

#24,085 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

After showing off a strong opening volume with Darth Vader and his supporting cast, writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca continue to shed more light on the dark lord himself. Whereas the first volume introduced readers to Vaders supporting characters and planted seeds for future plots, volume 2 sheds more light on Vader’s own goals and the lengths he takes to get them.Collecting issues #7-12, by now Vader knows of the Emperors secret super soldier/Sith-manufactured beings, has his own underlings (Aphra, Triple Zero and BT-1), and a droid army at his disposal to come into power. But Vader needs a few other aspects to properly be a dominant power in the galaxy: money (credits) and workable connections from the crime underworld. Vader kills an intergalactic kingpin and takes their enormous fortune away on the grounds it gives Jabba the Hutt faith in Vader as mutual business partner and hands the fortune over the Empire (since Vader is still working for them after all). But Vader has Aphra and crew steal the credits from the Empire to make it all look like a simple robbery. Now Vader has all the things he needs to run his own empire and search out for Luke, but Grand General Tagge will not allow Vader to search for Skywalker and wants him to instead investigate who really stole the raided money by assigning a new assistant to Vader, who happens to be a deductive investigator. Now Vader has to lead this assistant away from finding out it was Vader who planned the heist, while also having Aphra’s crew look into Luke’s location and keep up the façade to the Empire.I know my general summary sounds like a lot – and it is-, but there are many details Kieron Gillen puts forth into this second volume and managed to me glued to what happens next. Gillen makes Vader put on a strong face as enforcer for the Emperor and the Imperial Empire, while trying to build up his private armada in secret. It’s not a volume that pushes the narrative forward greatly, but it’s just encapsulating to see Vader playing a game of cat-and-mouse under the Empires nose to cover his tracks, while he strengthening his own plans with strong character development as well.As volume 1, Vader found out he had a son. This makes an interest setup for the comic and fill-in for the movies. If you think about it, it makes sense. Vader was portrayed as the villain with no redeeming aspects about him in A New Hope, but he does seem to have softened up by Empire Strikes Back. Gillen’s Vader being put into position as one who wants to destroy the Emperor for lying to him about Padme fills in the void wonderfully, almost as if he is undermining the Empire for the Rebels. This is what makes Vader a character to root for, even if he still is the all-powerful villain. So Gillen’s handling of Vader is well done on all fronts. He says things just right, displays power, calmness, and intellect to be a scary main character and compelling one as well. The big factor this time around is Aphra and her crew get about half the page time as Vader, which might seem to hinder things as I felt Aphra was a bit too happy-go-lucky in the 1st volume. This time around, she’s more likable because we get more of a serious and even conniving change to her as she is doing Vader’s dirty work behind the scenes, as well as coming to grips if (and/or when) the day comes she will be expendable to Vader to cover up his own plans. It makes both her and Vaders’s story run parallel and comes together by issues #11/12 pretty.Again, all art is done soely by Salvador Larroca to great detail. There is the occasional panels that look a bit awkward, but it’s solid art and conveys the cloak-and-dagger, espionage very well. Especially Vader himself, which even with no visible emotions, conveys power and intrigue with every page. While I thought this is an improved second volume, I think it also replaces the problems from volume one in other ways. As much as I enjoyed the intrigue of Vader trying to be a general and hiding his true motives, one could argue it adds a lot of unneeded complexity and characters to the time. Quite a bit of the issues is of Vader’s new assistant rabbling on in great detail over the investigation that could have been shortened, as well as invoking a host of new characters like Vader’s assistant, bounty hunters, and some general akbar-like creature that will (or will not) mean anything in the future. There is a lot of moving pieces here that could confuse people. And although the integration of the Prequels is not as prevalent here as vol.1 (which was still small), there comes a major aspect in the story that still reverts back to those films which I know some fans will hate. And the very last aspect is the ending wraps up a bit to sudden considering Gillen spent 5 issues moving things slowly and then speeding it up at the end.Other than that, DARTH VADER VOLUME 2: SHADOWS AND SECRETS is still an awesome series for looking deeper into Vader and his actions from Episode IV to V. He’s still incredibly interesting and portrayed properly, his supporting cast has improved (Triple-Zero and BT are hoots for their dark sense of humor), great art, and complex story telling. It may be overly confusing for some or too drawn out, but it’s still a solid series that I will continue to read more about, especially the cliffhanger ending.Which things will change up pretty dramatically as 3-issues of Vader will tie-in to the “VADER DOWN” crossover under Jason Aaron. I’ve already read the entire event, but I’ll write about for the next review. After that event, the story of Vader will get back on track under the creative team of Gillen and Larroca.

This is a great continuation of the Darth Vader comic series. It's great to have the new characters of Aphra, BeeTee, and Triple-Zero back in this issue as they are truly the greatest characters in this comic series. One note, despite what the numbering and what Amazon says, the comic is continued in the Vader Down collection which is a crossover with the Star Wars comic, but if you skip it you will be lost in the last two Darth Vader collections. This collection leads directly into Vader Down. Again, highly recommended. If you have read Volume 1, definitely continue with this one.

This series artfully captures the gap in Annakin Skywalker's transition from the Clone Wars era ambitious youth to the Imperial era stoic tyrant. We get to see a side of Darth Vader that is not shown in the original series, while at the same time never betraying the original portrayal of this iconic character. The story remains relevant even if the stakes feel somewhat low due to knowing that Darth Vader succeeds in the task he's set to - Vader frequently comments that this entire saga is a pointless waste of his time, and yet even so we don't feel like the story is boring. The characters that are introduced are interesting, and the main supporting cast (while small) keep me intrigued and wanting to know more, even though I don't normally go in for 'evil' protagonists. My only gripe lies with the artwork. Let me be clear: the art and illustration is BEAUTIFUL, so this gripe is just a minor nitpick (hence the 5-star rating). That being said, I feel that the artist needs some work making human faces seem less out of place. Every human face really doesn't seem to fit the quality and detail of the rest of the artwork. Non-human faces (including, ironically, the still mask of Darth Vader) come through as expressive and well done, but human faces seem bizarrely contorted and lacking proper emotion. Let me reiterate though that this was merely the most notable - but still quite minor - flaw I could manage to find in the series thus far.

I have to say that I really had a tough time wrapping my head around both the writing and art style of the Darth Vader graphic novels. Kieron Gillen isn't very clear in his approach and I find myself having to re-read several portions to understand what's going on. Same goes for Salvador Larocca's artwork. It's just so mysterious at times and I find myself needing re-cover material that should have a simple flow to it. All that being said, Gillen is a visionary and has come up with some brilliant concepts that are enjoyable to experience. Telling the story from the perspective of the Empire, and slowly seeing Darth Vader's character develop from what we see between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is quite enjoyable. All-in-all a solid-enough story to get 4-star review from me.

I love Doctor Aphra, tripple 0 (imagine a murderous C3P0) and Darth Vader. The balance between serious and humorous is hard to achieve but this comic does it.Plus I just love to see Vader be a moving weapon of mass destruction. I also love reading about his own secret agenda and maneuvers. It shows he is a true sith. Not just a murdering machine but also an agent acting in the shadows. Not just against the Rebellion, but even the Empire if the Empire and Palpatine happen to have different interests from Vader.

So, so so good. It's very Vader, right down to how he reacts to EVERYTHING. The supporting characters are so fantastic too, especially the murderbots, and I enjoy learning about some of the story that's been left untold.

If they ever decide to do a Darth Vader movie, Kieron should write it. Aphra, having robbed an imperial ship full of credits, putting Vader an an imperial officer on her tail. Along with what Vader calls blasphemies, created under the auspices of the emperor, will she escape?

Review

"Great for young kids because it tells the bare-bones version of Bible stories without delving into more difficult concepts. Each story also has a very simplistic truth application for the child. This book truly is a great introductory Bible storybook for little hearts. I also like that the Bible story depicts the biblical characters as Middle Eastern, rather than white -- a far more accurate depiction." --KidzMatter

Wow, I'm thrilled! Larger than I expected and great heavy duty quality! The content itself is amazing as well. It even goes as far as to discuss the crucifixion, which many children's Bibles are leaving out these days. The illustrations are spot on and I'm happy to see a dark(er) more accurate depiction of Jesus rather than the whitewashed version we're all too familiar with. After finishing this review, I'm going to purchase a few more for all the toddlers in my life and then I'm going to purge our other children's Bible (you know, the ones where the only character darker than beige is the "villain" Goliath).

I bought this to read to my son, who is only three months. We are both African American, so the realistically melanated characters appealed to me.I really like the illustrations. They are bright and colorful, and this was the first book my son showed real interest in. He kept flipping the book to the cover to stare at the picture of Jesus and the children, and he would lean forward and touch the page while I read to him. Each of these short stories is about two pages, and they end with a little moral/lesson, so it is more of a devotional. The reason I took off a star is because in the Noah's Ark story they have a common misconception--the animals went seven by seven AND two by two. The Frolic versions just says the animals went two by two, which is wrong.

Great little bible, teaches some of the most well known stories for children in board book style. Almost every story fits on two pages. The stories are very brief, and end with a lesson or moral. I would say this is good for toddler through preschool age. I love that the illustrator chose to draw the people in all shades. I actually searched high and low for a bible like this. Now, some people don’t like that it’s kind of “cartoony” (big eyes, little bodies, etc) looking, and I didn’t really like it at first. But I realized that that look appeals to children more than a more realistic picture. So I actually like that they’re “cartoony” now, cause my son is more interested. I really like the simplicity for young children, the lessons at the end, and the illustrations. Definitely get it!

I gave this Bible to my son for Christmas and he instantly loved the picture of Jesus on the cover. It makes me happy because I searched to make sure his first Bible had brown-skinned depictions. We talk about Jesus and point him out every time we sit down to read. The pages are thick so it’s easy for my 4-month old to help turn the pages. This Bible has fun illustrations and lots of fun stories. This book is great but there are a few things I would personally change if I could. I wish the stories were 4 pages instead of two. I try to talk through each page with my son and point out the animals and people, but we still get through each story pretty quickly. I was really bummed that in the story where Mary & Joseph lost track of Jesus and found him in the temple, Jesus said didn’t you know I would be in “God’s” house instead of “my fathers” house/business. The rest of the book clearly refers to Jesus as Gods son, but I remember for me as a child it really stuck with me that Jesus was in his Fathers house, so it’s a just a bummer for me that they couldn’t figure out a way to say that in this telling of the story.Overall this is a nice first Bible for a baby.

We’re an ethnically diverse family, and I wanted something for my one year old where the characters in the pictures weren’t all white people. (I’m the white person in my family so I can say this... don’t judge me.) I’m so glad I found this. I hesitate to call it a “Bible” because it’s sinplified bible stories for kiddos. It’s most certainly only the bare bones and basics of 40 stories. But it works well for nighttime bible story reading before bed or whenever. My son loves it and pulls it around the room and looks at the pictures. The illustrations are very well done. The majority of characters are brown. Browner than any other children’s bible I’ve seen. We love it. Pages are sturdy too and can withstand some abuse which was also a big deal for me when I was looking. Will likely get the Frolic Preschool Bible next when we go up an age level. Very satisfied.

I would recommend this book for toddlers up to about the age of 5. The drawings are excellent. It's refreshing to see that the people of Palestine were not all Scandinavian in biblical days. Each layout presents a Biblical scene, from the Old or New Testament. The words are very simple and end with a little thought to apply the story to our own lives. (I gave the book to my goddaughter, so I don't have it at hand to quote an example.)The book skips over all unpleasant or scary ideas, which makes some of the stories puzzling or confusing. For example, baby Moses is floating in a little basket in the river. Pharaoh's daughter finds him. His sister Miriam offers to find someone to care for him and takes him to their mother, where he will be safe. I can see a child asking, "Who put him in the river? Why? How is he going to be safe? From what? Will his mother put him in the river again?" I would suggest that parents add their own explanations, to give a little more context. They know how much scariness their kids can handle.Edit after two months of use.=======================The binding of this book is very delicate and even light handling by a toddler is apt to cause the cover to come off. Only a thin piece of paper holds the covers to the binding. I had to completely rebind the book, using heavy tape which I hope will make it more durable. However, the tape covers part of the text on the cover and the book no longer opens flat.

I love this. There are 20 Bible stories, each told on 2 pages, in everyday English. 10 stories are from the Old Testament and 10 are about Jesus from the New Testament. Each story is summed up with a moral that applies to the child. For example, I included a picture of the story of Abraham & Sarah, a previously childless couple who were blessed with a baby. The take-away is “You are a blessing to your family.”
